Winfred Murphy Obituary

Winfred Murphy
passed away peacefully on Feb. 7 at the age of 69 following a brief illness. Winfred was born on Nov. 10, 1943 in Massillon, Ohio to John Wesley and Annie Ruth McDade Murphy.  He was the ninth of nine children born to this union. Winfred was educated in the Massillon school system. He was later inducted into the U.S. Army and served in Germany for two years.  He was an avid bowler and was a member of the American Bowling Congress and various other organizations. Winfred bowled a perfect score of 300 and was awarded a ring which was engraved with his name and the 300 score.  He loved all sports.  Winfred loved life and people, he never met a stranger. Winfred was a walking poet and could recite the Bible, Martin Luther King Jr., Paul Laurence Dunbar and many other poets from  memory.  Winfred is preceded in death by his parents, John and Ruth Murphy; one brother, John Willie Murphy; four sisters, Johnnie Mae Murphy, Lula Parthena Murphy, Zelda Ruth Murphy, Madeline Marie Murphy.
He is survived by one brother, Alex G. Murphy of Southfield, Mich.; and two sisters, Juanita McLaurin of Canal Winchester, Ohio and Josephine Murphy of Canton, Ohio. A host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews will miss him as well. A special thank you to his cousin, James Myricks, whom Winfred spent time with, along with a host of special friends, Clarence Owens, Ida Ross Freeman and those that we will affectionately call, the McDonald's crew, who met on a regular basis to just shoot the breeze.
A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013 at 10 a.m. in the Rhoden Memorial Home Chapel, 729 Cherry Ave., NE, Canton, OH  44702.  The family will receive condolences at 9:30 a.m.
