Carl Kaiser Obituary

Carl Kaiser, the youngest of four children and only son, was born to Joseph and Barbara Kaiser of Baltimore, Maryland on February 8, 1929. Carl received his elementary school education in Baltimore and Pasadena, Maryland public schools. After graduation from Glen Burnie High School, he attended the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy followed by Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Pharmaceutical Chemistry. He served in the United States Navy for two years, from 1946-1948, and was a SmithKline & French postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Virginia for two years. In 1957, he joined SmithKline & French Laboratories in Philadelphia as a Senior Medicinal Chemist where he carried out new drug development research until his early retirement as Senior Research Fellow in 1986. From 1986 until his final retirement in 1994, he served as Consulting Director and Director of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry for Nova Pharmaceutical Corporation in Baltimore. His research resulted in numerous publications, a book "Dopamine Receptors", patents, reviews and lectures. He was a member of several scientific organizations including the American Chemical Society where he served on the Editorial Advisory Board and was Book Review Editor of the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry. Carl married Emma Jeannette Jones on January 31, 1953. They have four children, Carl Kaiser, Jr. (Laura) of Severna Park, Maryland, Claire Diane Kaiser (deceased), Mary Lynn Gillespie (Joseph) of Marmora, New Jersey and Carole Jeannette D'Ascenzo (Michael) of Haddon Heights, New Jersey. They have nine grandchildren, Kimberly Diane Kaiser (Ted Harre), Kathlyn Marie Catalano (Stephen), Kevin Carl Kaiser, Ryan Joseph Gillespie, Scott Timothy Gillespie (May), Thomas Carl Gillespie, Jena Diane Quinn (Stephen), Patrick Carl D'Ascenzo (Heather) and Claire Marie D'Ascenzo. They have seven great grandchildren, Raelin Gillespie, Peyton Quinn, Vinny Catalano, Colton Gillespie, Hadley Quinn, Colette Catalano and Brody Gillespie. Carl was involved in a number of church and civic activities. He was president of Haddon Heights Youth Athletics and served as an umpire for the organization for eighteen years. He was active in a number of church capacities, including president of Parish Council of Saint Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Haddon Heights, New Jersey and at Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Severna Park, Maryland where he served as a greeter and Eucharistic Minister. In recognition of his service in the church in 1987 Carl was honored with the Bishop's Medal of the Diocese of Camden. He was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus and served a number of years as treasurer and financial secretary for Holy Trinity Council No. 3413 in Severna Park. He was Knight of the year 2006-2007. Carl was an active member of the Pascal Senior Center in Glen Burnie where he was a VITA (Volunteer in Income Tax Assistance) volunteer and served on the Board of Directors of Pascal Seniors, Inc. as secretary and treasurer. His senior volunteer activities were recognized by his induction into the Maryland Senior Citizen Hall of Fame in 2002. He enjoyed his family, amateur accounting activities and gardening. An ardent sports fan, he was an enthusiastic supporter of the Orioles, Ravens and Baltimore Colts. Family and friends may visit on Tuesday, July 6, 2021 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at Barranco Severna Park Funeral Home & Cremation Care, P.A., 495 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park, MD, 21146. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at 10am at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 689 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park, MD, 21146. Interment is to follow at Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pascal Center at 125 Dorsey Rd, Glen Burnie, MD, 21061, or to St. John the Evangelist Church at 698 Ritchie Hwy, Severna Park, MD, 21146.
