CARLOTA ZAVALA Obituary

Our beloved Carlota passed away peacefully in her home the evening of Dec. 13, 2014. She was 90 years old. Carlota was born on June 15, 1924 in La Gabia Mpio. San Carlos Tamaulipas, the daughter of Vicente Limon and Onecima Zavala.

She was preceded in death by her beloved parents and sisters, Isabel Limon de Gutierrez and Severiana Limon de Lopez.

She is survived by two sisters, Carlota Limon de Vasquez and Candelaria Limon de Puga, as well as many nephews and nieces that loved her dearly.

For the past 53 years, Carlota lived with and was deeply loved and cherished by the Rubinsky family in Brownsville, Texas. She helped to raise the family, who were like children and grandchildren to her including Nina Rubinsky, Melanie Rubinsky and Javier Solis, and Abrey and Lisa Rubinsky and their children, Adam and Alana. She devoted her life to the Rubinskys and they, in turn, devoted theirs to her. She was a dear friend and companion to Guerta Rubinsky and Simon Rubinsky, who predeceased her.

She was also very much loved and will be deeply missed by her four-legged companion, Yofi.

Carlota had a wonderful sense of humor, deep devotion and a zest for life. She had recently traveled to Alaska where she canoed, walked on a glacier, visited a wildlife refuge, and flew in a float plane, among other things. She always seemed, to the very end, eternally youthful. She loved to read, watch her novellas and, most of all, she loved to cook. Anyone that knew Carlota loved her amazing salsa, tortillas, her rice and beans, tamales and cookies! She always made sure she had enough of everything for anyone that stopped by to visit. Carlotita was a gem that will be deeply missed.

The family would like to particularly thank Carlota's niece, Cristina Rodriguez for her invaluable assistance over the last several weeks, as well as Francis Gumbel, MD and his staff, the healthcare workers who cared for Carlota and Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity Carlota donated to often, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Darling-Mouser Funeral Home, 945 Palm Blvd, Brownsville, Texas 78520, and (956) 546-7111.
