Christina Davidson Obituary

Christina (Tina) Thomsen Davidson lost her battle with breast cancer on January 7, 2022, in Annapolis, Maryland. She was 74. Tina began her most recent career of translating literary Braille but quickly switched to music Braille. She became one of 40 certified Braille music copyists in the United States. Her calligraphy appeared in publications by almost every major publisher, including the University of Chicago Press and Cambridge University Press in the United Kingdom. She penned the names of the graduates on the diplomas of the United States Naval Academy in 1982 and 1983. Tina was the music librarian for St. John's College in Annapolis for several years. She worked with print publications of many kinds and wrote words and music for several children's songbooks. She played guitar and French horn and was a talented vocalist and formed her own musical trio. She was a guitar teacher at Charlie Byrd's Music House in Annapolis. Tina grew up in Marshfield, Wisconsin, and graduated from Marshfield Senior High School in 1965. She graduated from Beloit College with a degree in music in 1969. She then moved to the Annapolis area, where she spent the rest of her life. For many decades Tina spent her summers in Ontonagon, Michigan, and loved the natural beauty of the Upper Peninsula. She leaves a brother, Brock Thomsen, who lives in northern Minnesota. She died as she lived, with courage, grace and beauty. Donations can be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake Foundation, 90 Ritchie Hwy., Pasadena, MD 21122 or to the Captain Avery Museum, 1418 E West Shady Side Rd, Shady Side, MD 20764 where she frequently volunteered.

I attended Beloit College with Tina. We were friends and roommates for the whole four years. After graduation we tried to stop and say hello if our paths came close together. I admired her musical talent and her individuality. Her smile and sincerity never dimmed. The world has lost a quiet talent.

I knew Tina well, and encouraged her desire to pursue music braille.

She asked me if there would be any demand if she got into that field. I told her: "Tina, do it! You'll have more music work than you can ever handle." She asked me questions about code, and later I found myself working with her on the revised BANA music code, and on the transcribers' handbook. As a career commercial, jazz, and classic guitarist and teacher, I would usually send braille music guitar transcription work on to her, as I knew that she was far more current on it than me; even though she always said that one of my transcriptions was her first guide.

She once told me that she had been a music copyist (before computers), and even a real press typesetter. Tina was nothing less than a "giant" in this fast growing profession!
