Francis K. Smith

Francis Katherine Griffin "Kakey" Smith, 78, died of congestive heart failure on July 19 at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis. Kakey was born on February 3, 1940, in Bryan, Texas, to Floyd C. "Peel" and Francis Griffin. She graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1962 with a degree in education, and married Norman J. Smith in September 1962 in Bryan. They moved to Maryland shortly thereafter, living first in Bowie, and then in Arnold, where she resided until her death. Over the years, Kakey held employment as a schoolteacher, librarian, administrative assistant and legislative aide. Her hobbies included book club, playing bridge and mahjong, and attending her current events class at AACC. She was also an avid traveler. She was preceded in death by her father in 1963, her husband of 40 years in 2003, and her mother in 2004. She is survived by her son Davis N. Smith and his wife Amanda Ferguson of Cottage Grove, Oregon; her daughter Stephanie Smith Frizzell and her husband Mark Frizzell of Aiken, S.C.; and her older brother Donnell Griffin and his wife Sue of Plano, Texas. A memorial services will be held on Thursday, July 26, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Gloria Dei! Lutheran Church, 461 College Parkway in Arnold. A reception will follow at her home. Interment will be at Bryan City Cemetery in Bryan, Texas.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Assistance League of the Chesapeake, www.ALChesapeake.org.
