Irmgard Davis Obituary

Irmgard E Davis of Annapolis Md, formerly of Fort Meade, Md., died peacefully on Friday, September 28 at Sunrise Senior Living facility in Severna Park, Md. She was 96. She was born in Krefeld Germany on August 9, 1922, to her parents, William and Catherine Bohndorf, and is predeceased by her two brothers, Hans and Alphonse, and sister Greta. Irmgard's passion was nature, and in her younger years she enjoyed hiking and skiing in the Alps. Her other life-long passion was drawing and at an early age had wanted to study art. However, her father persuaded her "to look for a profession or be a starving artist." Hence, she attended college and achieved a degree in architecture, and was employed as an architect in Linz, Austria during WWII. After the war she served as an architect, master planner, and draftsperson for the U.S. Navy. Irmgard became a war bride and married Curtis E. Davis (retired Army Chief Warrant Officer and since deceased) in an Army installation in Germany in 1947. They were married for 49 years and lived at numerous Army installations in Europe and the U.S. She is predeceased by her daughter, Margaret E. Davis, and survived by her three sons, Steven D. Davis, Michael J. Davis, and Robert W. Davis.She is also survived by 7 grandchildrenand 13 great grandchildren. A loving mother and homemaker, Irmgard was involved in numerous volunteer activities for over 50 years,primarily centered around organizations present on Army installations worldwide. An accomplished artist, she taught art classes to members of the Officer's Wives Club and retirement communities in the area, working with oils and watercolors. She also served as a Red Cross volunteer at then Kimbrough Army Hospital, and as a chairman for hospital volunteer sat another location. She was the co-founder, board member, and president of the Retired Officers Wives Club and had received several Army citations for her fund-raising efforts with the German American Club, officers' clubs, and thrift shops. She was very involved with activities at the Fort Meade Post Chapel, where she sang with the choir and was a Chapel Council member. Besides family, Irmgard's long-time passion was travel. In her later years, she had the joy of traveling to Europe, including her beloved Germany, and enjoyed numerous cruises with her family to the Mediterranean and the surrounding countries. Memorial services will be held at Hardesty Funeral Home, Gambrills. Md on Oct 28, from 3 -5 P.M. Afterwards there will be a celebration of life gathering with food and refreshments at the residence of Michael and Maureen Davis in Davidsonville, Md., starting at 6 P.M. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Humane Society of the United States or Red Cross.
