John Chew Obituary

John Louis Chew, Jr., 76, died suddenly of a heart attack in Harwood, Maryland on January 10, 2021. John "Bubba" Chew leaves behind his wife of almost 50 years, son and daughter-in-law Jake and Stephanie Chew, daughter and son-in-law Denby and Jason Flynn, and his 4 grandchildren, Keely and Grayson Flynn and Jules and Jack Chew. His sisters, Candy Campbell and Deedee Payne and brothers, Stan Chew and Tim Chew. His parents, VADM John L. Chew and Helen L. Chew, preceded him in death. John attended schools in Annapolis, England, Italy and graduated boarding school at St. James Episcopal School in Hagerstown, MD. He graduated from The George Washington University, but completed one semester at Sophia University in Japan. His graduate studies began at the University of Maryland and he completed his Masters degree at the University of Virginia. John enjoyed a lengthy career with the National Park Service (NPS) as a Park Ranger. He was stationed at Capitol National Park, Prince William Forest Park, Lake Mead, Sequoia and Shenandoah National Park. John, along with his team, received a Presidential Citation for a mountainous cave rescue and extraction, which took four days. He furthered his career in emergency management with the DOT where he developed a program to assess EMS systems from State Level to County Level. Upon retirement from the government, John started The Emsstar Group to provide consulting services for States/Counties to develop their own specific plans for the future of EMS systems. He ended his career as the EMS Director with Queen Anne's County in Maryland. The family will be having a Celebration of Life in July.
