Michael DiMario Obituary

Michael F. DiMario, age 87, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2024, in Annapolis, where he was in the loving care of his son Stephen DiMario. Born on May 30, 1937, in New York, Michael was the son of the late Philip and Frances DiMario (nee Pizzoferrato}. He grew up in the Bronx. Michael attended Cardinal Hayes High School and later graduated from Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia. Michael continued his graduate studies, obtaining a JD from Georgetown Law School and completed an AMP at Harvard Business School. Michael married his college sweetheart, Priscilla C. Weaver, on June 25, 1960. Together they raised three sons: Michael Gregory, Stephen Robert, and Christopher James. He was a proud grandfather to two grandchildren, Gregory and Serephina. Michael had a distinguished career as a civil servant. He was a Captain in the Air Force in the Office of Special Investigations and was stationed in Dover, Delaware, and Scotland, UK. After obtaining his JD, Michael began his legal career as a contracts, wills, and torts attorney. The culmination of his 30+ year career was his appointment by President William J. Clinton as the Director of Government Printing Office, serving as the 23rd Public Printer of the United States of America until his retirement in 2003. Michael also served many years as a Bowie City Councilman. A public visitation will be held on July 13, 2024, from 11 am to 1 pm at Lasting Tributes Funeral Home, 814 Bestgate Road, Annapolis, followed by a burial at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Forest Drive, Annapolis. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Hospice of Chesapeake.

My deep condolences over the loss of Michael. I knew him on a professional and personal level; he was a great leader in the Federal Depository library community, a vocal and long time supporter of many causes within and outside of his profession and dear friend to all who entered into his circle of life. In my opinion he was the best Public Printer I worked with in a 35+ year career.

He always would ask how one's family was doing, cared for all who worked with him, and most importantly, was a decent guy who loved his work, his family, food and baseball. He always had a smile, was most approachable, and demonstrated a genuine concern for issues of the day that concerned the Depository Library community.

One of my most cherished memories of him was taking him to the Bronx to see his beloved Yankees while the Library Association meeting was in New York City. I had a blast with him, enjoy a hotdog, a beer and his baseball stories about the great players he saw while growing up.

He was a leader many aspired to be, influenced many during their careers, and was deeply missed when he retired. He certainly made me a better librarian, leader, and man.

May he rest with those proceeding him, enjoying laughter and a good baseball game.

I knew Mike and Priscilla as fellow parents. Their Chris and our Jeff graduated in the same class at Key. I thought they were great-engaged, involved, knowledgeable, loving. I most remember Mike for his energy, his commitment to the community, his great smile, and his irresistible laugh. The world is less bright without him. We send our best wishes to his family.

Sympathies and prayers for the family of Mike DiMario. I work at the GPO and knew Mike DiMario when he was an Adminstrative Law Judge and Public Printer. He was one of us at GPO. I remember riding down Main Street in Annapolis one day and Mike DiMario was walking down Main Street at the same time. It was a beautiful day and I had my window down. He yelled out, "Hi Maureen" and I yelled back "Hi Mike". He was personable and knew most of our names. He knew my father too. He was a good person. God Bless him and his family.

First and foremost, I want to express my condolences to the family and friends.
I held the position of Chairman of the Joint Council of Unions/GPO during his tenure as Public Printer of the United States. He served with honor and integrity. He treasured being Public Printer and the employees sensed that and knew he respected their work and efforts to deliver first-rate products to all three branches of the U.S. Government.
We often had conversations about the business of the GPO in his office. He couldn't help himself during these conversations to present the history lessons of topics of the day. I treasured these times with him and I gained a great deal of respect and admiration for him as a leader and the man.
