Robert Hicks Obituary

Robert Hicks

Robert Lewis Hicks, "Bob," 89, of Shoreham Beach, died in his home July 22 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's.
He was born on September 19, 1922 in West View, Virginia and raised with five siblings in rural Goochland County. After graduating from Goochland High School in 1941, he attended the University of Richmond before enlisting in the Air Force (then the Army Air Force). During
World War II, Mr. Hicks served as an aviator and test pilot. After graduating from the College of William and Mary in 1949, he was recalled from the Reserves for the Korean War and stationed variously at Elmendorf AFB near Anchorage, AK, Kelly AFB, near San Antonio, TX and at Ft. Meade. He was also stationed briefly in Turkey. After retiring from the Air Force in 1968 with the rank of Major, Bob worked for the NSA in Ft. Meade for 15 years before retirement in 1983.
In May of 1944, Bob met his wife-to-be Jean Crawford on a blind date in Syracuse, NY. They were married in Randolph, N.Y. on June 21, 1947.
In addition to Jean, his wife of 65 years, he is survived by three children, Tom (Lori) of Laurel, Shelley (Dick) of Galesville, and Andy (Jeannie) of Boulder, CO; a sister, Olive Hollins of Goochland Co., VA; and six grandchildren, Erin and Chloe Bean, Anna Houck, Becca and Libby Hicks, and Liam Yuill; and one great-grandchild, Camden Houck.
Family and friends will gather for a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, at All Hallows Church, 3604 Solomons Island Rd, Edgewater. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Hospice of the Chesapeake, or All Hallows Parish.
