I am so sad to learn of Web´s passing. He helped my family when we moved to MD and became a friend. A wonderful storyteller, generous, and always ready to listen and give advice. Thanks for all the laughs.

It's tough to lose a "best friend," especially after watching together a basketball game, just 2 days prior to his "passing!" And Web and I loved the "passing game (at a much different level)!

Web was my basketball coach at Mercersburg Academy. He was a great person and always entertaining. As much as anything I always remember him making me laugh.

I was fortunate to have Web as my basketball coach at Mercersburg but more importantly as my friend.

We all have people in our lives who we keep a special place in our heart for and I will never forget him and his help for me as a coach and friend.

I remember sitting in the classroom at Randolph-Macon Academy, during the teacher orientation at the beginning of the 2012 summer school session. I noticed a giant of a man walk in the room, whom I soon had the pleasure of meeting. His name was Web Johnson.

I'll never forget our first conversation, which happened over lunch later that day, at the Lucky Star Lounge in downtown Front Royal, Virginia. We talked for several hours as I learned of Web's passion for sports, particularly basketball and baseball. He and I took turns naming each player, position by position, on his beloved 1966 Orioles, and my 1967 Kansas City A's. Well, it wasn't long before I realized I had truly met my match in this arena called "Sports Trivia". Never had I encountered anyone with the amazing recall of names, places and minute details like
Web Johnson. Little did I know at the time the true depth of his amazing memory, as I came to find out over the next several years.

Over the rest of the summer in 2012, and subsequent summers in the following several years, our friendship grew. From road trips to Washington D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland, I came to better know and love this gentle giant of a man. And trust me, Chevy Chase's movie Vacation, pales in comparison to our experiences on these trips!

Never at a loss for words, I know one thing, Web is up there in heaven right now, talking God's ear off. Web, rest in peace, I love you, our friendship is one I will treasure forever. You were truly the best friend I have ever had! I will miss all the great adventures and card games!

Linda, Savannah, Christopher:

I can still remember Webster walking back from from tackle football practice (Tbirds with Berry Carter, Mike Ballas or the Pastrana dads - Charlie and Henry?) from what was then the Annapolis Junior and Senior High School complex, He was walking in his socks with his cleats over his shoulder pads. We are talking seriously stinky feet! I would be riding my bike and would hop off so he could send me some passes. I think he was eight and I was six. Webster was already a big boy and I am certain a force to be reckoned with on the field. It didn't matter that I was just a squirt. He always made time for me and I felt six feet tall when he would give me a compliment for "good hands!" or "nice move!"

Riding back and forth to school with Webster during our high school years was a hoot. Webster always had a kind word for everyone and a story to tell.

Later I was his gopher as he coached an all star AAU team to a Maryland State Championship. Every two hour practice was planned in his notes down to the minute. Those kids worshipped him. I learned more basketball in those six months from Webster than I had learned in the prior forty five years. And I had been a fanatic player, always looking for a game. Webster's knowledge and, more importantly, his love of basketball were legendary. In Webster's mind anyone could play. "If you can catch and guard, you can play."

Later when our boy was still in diapers, Webster, Savannah, and Christopher met up with us at a kiddie track meet behind Maryland Hall. Our boy caught Web's eye and he told us about another angel of the basketball world, Ed Wilson. After Webster's recommendation and a quick look in February when he was two, Ed said with a chuckle "Let's wait until he turns three." In July of that year before preschool started, Ed called and said "bring him in August." We have always believed Webster was responsible for our boy's love of athletics.

Over dinner our boy described a problem he was having with his math homework. No problem for Webster, he tailored his explanation perfectly for a twelve year old and their friendship began. A true coach and a wonderful human being - that was Webster.

There are tears in my eyes for you, Linda, Christopher, and Savannah. And for Webster. And for me. I have a lost a true friend.

My deepest condolences to the Johnson family. "Web" was my favorite teacher at Gilman, a true friend and mentor. He pushed me to excell and believed in me when I doubted myself. He gave me the nick-name of "Pastry Puff" due to my love of donuts! He will truly be missed but his legacy will live on through his family and the numerous student/ athletes whose lives he touched!

The (Men's) Huddle at St. Anne's most Saturday mornings was blessed to have Web as a member for nearly 10 years. His faith journey and dedication to coaching and mentoring were well known. His perspectives always added to our breakfast conversations and Bible study discussions. Not to mention the many occasions where some scriptural passage reminded him of a movie, and he would then tell us in clear and relevant terms why it did. We so enjoyed his sense of humor about life. I too remember listening to his Good News radio program, always impressed by how well he prepared for his interviews.

Although we had not touched base in the last few years, I thought of Web and how kind he was to myself and my sons. I often wondered how he was doing and let time go by without reaching out to him. He seemed like a big kid in a big man's body who was excited about life. He was always busy doing something. I would smile when thinking of him and I smile still knowing what a really free spirit he is now. Thank you Web for being a part of our life.
