William Knowles Obituary

William Richard Knowles
July 16, 1949 - June 8, 2023
Encinitas William Richard Knowles, Jr, (Rick) passed away peacefully in North County San Diego, CA on June 8, 2023. Rick was known for his brilliant, quick sense of humor, and his kindness. While socially shy, he could keep those nearest to him laughing through many a boring event. It was often said that Rick should have been a comedy writer with his unique way of looking at the world and his witty observations about human nature. Born to a career Army Master Aviator father, the late Colonel Bill and mother, Marmion Knowles in Seattle, Washington, Rick and his four siblings T.J., Cindy, Jeff and Rob experienced dozens of moves around the USA and Germany during their childhoods. Attending 16 schools before graduating high school, Rick was a smart student, and was awarded a National Merit Scholarship in 1967. He attended the University of Washington, where he met a group of guys who became lifelong friends. After graduating in 1971, he worked for The Marriott Corporation, then went on to create a successful commercial music "jingle" company in Los Angeles with his three brothers and Mom. His ability to produce great song titles and his lyrical talent were key elements in helping The Knowles Group create national music campaigns for clients such as Del Monte, Lay's, Chevrolet, and many more. Later, he teamed with The Family Circus and created a series of children's songs, which received high praise. Most recently, his kid's song, Bubble Kisses, was recorded and released along with a book by Grammy Nominee and Award-Winning actress, Vanessa Williams. Rick was most proud of his children, Lindsey and Will, and delighted in their talents. His role as grandfather to Henry and Archie was the highlight of his later years. He was an attentive and loving father and grandfather, a great older brother, an adept crossworder, a worrywart, and a poet. Rick was a man of Faith, attending St James Catholic Church in Solana Beach, CA. He is sorely missed. Rick is survived by his siblings Thomas (Diann), Cindy (Hollis), Jeff (Tara, deceased) Rob Roy (Kristie); his children Lindsey (Michael) and William (Ashley); his grandchildren Henry and Archie; and his best friend Joe Teague. He has four nieces and five nephews whom he treasured. He was grateful for the excellent care he received in his final phase of life from Traditions Hospice. Donations in Rick's name can be made to Meals On Wheels.

I only recently saw that Rick had passed in the Phi Kappa Psi National Fraternity magazine "The Shield",much to my sorrow. We were fraternity brothers at the U of W and although I have not seen Rick since his graduation in 1971, his wit and humor left a long lasting impression on me and my fellow freshmen pledges . He and his other junior class members ,Joe,Dan and Mike should have formed a comedy team. I won't forget the guy.
