Daniel Couchenour Obituary

Mr. Daniel Edgar Couchenour, 84, passed away at his home on Monday, Sept. 11, 2023.

Born in Herminie, Pa., Dan was the son of the late William and Annie Couchenour. He graduated from Sewickley High School, served in the U.S. Air Force, and received an associate degree from CPCC in Charlotte, N.C. Following his time in the service, Dan began his career with Eastern Airlines, where he developed his computer programming skills and later became part owner of a software development company.

Dan met BJ Corle in Washington, D.C., and after only nine weeks of romance, they married in 1959. They had a loving marriage for 63 years and rarely would you see one without the other. Dan and BJ raised four wonderful children, six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many adored pets. They have called Indian Land their home for nearly 50 years.

Faith in the Lord was very important to Dan. He was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, where he enjoyed being with the M&M's group and serving on numerous committees. Dan found pleasure and love in his church family.

Dan also enjoyed family, friends and golf. He considered Indian Land his home and had a love for high school sports, the Booster Club and the PTA. He continued to attend games and supported IL Warrior athletics. Dan always looked forward to his golf tee-times with lifelong foursomes who became part of his Southern family.

Dan, who was also known to his family as Poppy, found pride and joy in all things his grandchildren and great-grandchildren did. Hugs and kisses always brought a smile to Poppy's face.

Dan is survived by his children, Kelly C. Mitchum of Indian Land, Lori C. Griffin (Raymond) of Indian Land, Scott W. Couchenour (Teri) of Fort Mill and Bradley J. Couchenour (Rachel) of Charlotte; his grandchildren, Ryan Griffin (Amanda), Dan Couchenour (Hannah), Jacob Couchenour, Samantha Mitchum and George Couchenour; great-grandchildren, Riley and Aubrey Griffin and Zella and Storie Jane Couchenour. There are also numerous nieces and nephews who loved their Uncle Danny, as well as friends who became extended family.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jane Couchenour; his granddaughter, Kaitlin Alexandra Mitchum McKee; his sister, Elsie, and brother-in-law, Dave True; his brother, William Couchenour; sister Minerva; and brother-in-law, Jim Mismas.

Services were at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in Indian Land, with family visitation beginning at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, 238 Fort Mill Highway, Indian Land, SC 29707; or to Indian Land High School Athletic/Booster Club, 6100 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster, SC 29720.
