Larry Haines Obituary

Larry Eugene Haines, age 85, formerly of Westminster, MD, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family Saturday, January 13, 2024, at Lorien Taneytown Assisted Living. Larry was born April 11, 1938, in Woodbine, MD; the son of the late Arthur L. Haines and the late Evelyn M. Haines (nee Bair). Larry is the devoted and loving husband of Jane Marie Haines (nee Armfield) for 63 years. He was the cherished father of Garry A. Haines and wife Kelley of Westminster, Kevin E. Haines and wife Sherri of Westminster, Levi T. Haines and wife LeighAnn of Hanover, PA, and the late Matthew Keith Haines; dear brother of Donald Haines; and the late Winifred Harrison, late Virginia Bidinger, late Nevin Haines and the late Robert Haines; also survived by nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and the late granddaughter Mabel Ruth Haines. Larry attended Mount Airy High School, Mount Airy, Maryland, Frederick Community College. He was a former dairy farmer in Carroll County. He was the owner, broker, and appraiser at Haines Realty which he founded in 1972. A member of the Maryland Association of Realtors (Legislative Committee, 1986-90) Carroll County Association of Realtors; President of the Carroll County Association of Realtors from 1974-1976. Member of the American Association of Certified Appraisers, Realtor of the Year, Carroll County Association of Realtors in 1975, Carroll County Future of Agriculture Subcommittee. Member, Chair, Legislative Committee; Carroll County Chamber of Commerce; National Federation of Independent Businesses. Director of the Bank of Maryland Carroll County. Served on the board of trustees and became the President of Pleasant Ridge Cemetery Inc. from 1989-2022. Member of the Gideons; Member of the Fellowship of Christian Farmers. Former Vice-Chair of the Church Council at Church of the Open Door, Westminster, Maryland. Faithful and dedicated member of Church of the Open Door, Westminster, Maryland since 1979. He held the esteemed position of Maryland State Senator from January 9, 1991, to January 12, 2011. A member of the Economic and Environmental Affairs Committee, 1991; Advisory Commission on Federal-State-Local Relations, 1991-95; Joint Committee on Federal Relations, 1991-98; Judicial Proceedings Committee, 1992-2011; Executive Nominations Committee, 1995-2011; Joint Committee on the Management of Public Funds, 1999-2011. Minority Whip, 2001-02. Member of the Special Committee on Substance Abuse, 2001-11; Senate Committee on Redistricting, 2002; Joint Committee on the Selection of the State Treasurer, 2002, 2003, 2007; Rules Committee, 2002-03, 2007-11; Special Commission on Legislative Prayer, 2003; Senate Special Commission on Medical Malpractice Liability Insurance, 2004; Legislative Policy Committee, 2007-11. Senate Co-Chair, Protocol Committee, 2007-11. Chair, Carroll County Delegation, 1995-2011. Member of the Maryland Legislative Sportsmen's Caucus, 2001-11; Maryland Rural Caucus, 2002-11; Taxpayers Protection Caucus, 2003-11. Member of the National Conference of State Legislatures (legislative effectiveness committee, 2007-11). A gathering of friends and family will be held at the Church of the Open Door, 550 Baltimore Blvd., Westminster, MD 21157 on Friday January 19, 2024, from 3:30-5:30 PM and 7:00 PM- 9:00 PM and again on Saturday, January 20, 2024, from 10:00 am -11:00 am at which time the Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 AM with Dr. Norris E. Senator Haines was always a man that loved his Lord. He was always a Godly example during my time at open door. He was a great friend and helped me with a great blessing during my time early in my christian life . It was a privleage to have known Senator and Mrs Haines both.
