Sylvia E. Dell

Sylvia Etrula Bounds Dell, age 89, of Middleburg (formerly of Finksburg, MD), passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at Frederick Health Hospital. Born June 16, 1936, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Scott Renick Bounds and Elise Garmong Bounds. She was the beloved wife of Walter David Dell, with whom she shared 61 years of marriage before his passing in 2019. Sylvia is survived by her loving children and their spouses, Elise and Ray Hazel, and David and Judy Dell; her cherished grandchildren, Parker (Katie), Noah (Rebekah), Emily, and Jacob Dell; and her treasured great-granddaughters, Rosalie and her namesake, Sylvia. She was deeply devoted to her family and found her greatest joy in time spent with them. A 1954 graduate of Hagerstown High School, Sylvia was selected to attend the 4-H Club Congress in Chicago, where she participated in a fashion review, designing and modeling her own dress. She later attended the Richmond Institute of Design. Gifted with remarkable creativity and skill, Sylvia was truly a "jack of all trades." She was an accomplished seamstress who designed and sewed her own wedding gown as well as her daughter's wedding gown. She also excelled in artwork, particularly landscapes and architectural pieces, and was known as a wonderful cook. Sylvia delighted in helping her children-and later her grandchildren-with 4-H projects and school assignments, generously sharing her talents and encouragement. Sylvia was a faithful member of Taneytown Baptist Church, where she especially enjoyed her OWLS group. She loved gardening and valued her time at the Taneytown Library and the Westminster Senior Center, where she participated in art courses. In addition to her family, she held a special affection for her four cats, who brought her much comfort and companionship. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Frederick Health Hospital for their exceptional care and compassion. A private graveside service will be held at Baust Cemetery. A celebration of Sylvia's life will take place later this summer. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU, Box 980693, Richmond, VA 23298.
