In the course of business I saw Jon at the store every 2 weeks. I always enjoyed our conversations and I will miss him. He was as legendary as any of the baseball players he followed.

I always enjoyed visiting with Jon and loved his place. I played slow pitch against him and he traveled many times to Costa Rica. I´ll miss him.

I didn't know Jon very well, but I was one of those kids whose parents owned Nelson's Market (then Bob's Market) and lived upstairs from 1958-1966. My parents sold it to the Nelson Family and I believe Jon bought it from them. Jon was such a friendly guy and made so many improvements to the store and kept everything the "same" at the same time. It is a York District treasure. It was always a pleasure to stop in and talk to him. Thanks, Jon. Rest in peace.

Jon was my friend. A dear friend. We shared many adventures and stories from our Bellingham and Western days. Your laugh resonates with me, and your love of baseball and your Cubs will forever be in my memories. My heart and blessings go out to your family.

I met Jon at Highlands Junior High but got to know him much better during the summer between our sophomore and junior year of high-school when Jon, Harold Mausten snd I worked on a hay farm. We changed sprinklers, cut hay, baled it, picked it up and stacked it. We stopped at a mom and pop store to buy a pop for the non/airconditioned drives home when we heard on the radio that it had been 120 degrees that day. We had lots of time on the way to and from work to visit. Later, Jon came to my house in Kennewick and after not seeing him for years, was amazed about how much he had grown. I can see him jumping that fence to grab a six pack after the demonstration. He had a great sense of humor and I always enjoyed seeing him at our high school reunions. I knew he´d been to Viet Nam but he was too modest to tell us about his combat awards. He will be missed. Steve Osborne, Kennewick.

I only knew Jon the few years I lived in the York neighborhood in late 90's, but he showed in warm living color how to be a pillar of the community -- how to create community -- without being rigid or drab. Loved Benjy too. Best to Anne and the rest of his family.

Working at Nelson´s made my short time in Bellingham feel like I belonged to something special. I always looked forward to having breakfast in the cafe and visiting with Jon in the years that followed. He was a good man and an impressive friend to so many. Sending you all my love from Kansas City.

In 6th grade band, I played the snare drum and Jon the bass drum. Mr. Godfrey, our band leader, called us Knuckle and Buckle. We never played Carnegie but, our friendship never missed a beat, near and dear for 62 years.
Rattity tat tat Boom Boom tatatatatatat Boom, Boomity Boom Boom tattytattytattytatty Boom.
That was the Knuckle and Buckle Overture, produced and performed by Ron Tats Smith and Jon Boom Boom Ostby.
Play on Jon. We'll get the band back together.
