Anne Lienhard Heinsohn
June 14, 1932 - November 3, 2024
State College, Pennsylvania - Anne Lienhard Heinsohn passed away on November 3, 2024, at Foxdale Village.
Born in Hartford, CT, on June 14, 1932, Anne was the daughter of John and Florence Lienhard. She studied home economics education at Skidmore College and graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1954.
During the summer before her first teaching job, Anne met her future husband, Robert Heinsohn, who lived in the boarding house next door to her parents' home in Hartford. They married in July 1955 and moved to Baltimore, MD later in the year as Robert served in the U.S Air Force. Three years later they moved to Lansing, MI, where Robert, and later Anne, entered graduate school at Michigan State University.
Anne taught home economics at a variety of levels, ranging from high school to adult education in Baltimore and Lansing. She earned her master's degree in home economics education at Michigan State in 1962 while raising two daughters and working part time at the YWCA.
In 1963 Anne and her family moved to State College when Robert began his career as professor of Mechanical Engineering at Pennsylvania State University. Anne volunteered at a variety of places in town including the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and St. Andrew's Episcopal church.
They lived on their farm on Whitehall Road for 48 years, raising Angus cattle and an assortment of dogs and cats. Their huge vegetable garden enabled Anne to indulge in her lifelong love of food and cooking.
In 1968 Anne reentered the workforce as a research associate in the College of Human Development at Penn State, also returning to graduate school. After earning her PhD in Home Economics Education in 1974, Anne became a youth extension specialist for Penn State's Cooperative Extension Service.
She had responsibility for statewide leadership for the 4-H career education curriculum, 4-H consumer education management program and the child and youth developmental program and 4-H program evaluation. She advised master's and doctoral students and chaired the interdisciplinary graduate program in extension education. In 1985 the National Association of Extension 4-H Agents awarded her the Distinguished Service Award.
Anne wrote many articles for publication in journals and books and edited the "Around the State," the 4-H staff newsletter. She was a member of many professional associations and served on the board of the Penn State Credit Union. She was an associate professor of extension education at Penn State until she retired in 1997.
In retirement, Anne devoted much of her time to the AAUW, enjoying her time with members sorting books and helping organize the annual book sale. She served on the board that reviews grants for organizations serving women and children and scholarships to women, both of which are funded by the book sale.
Anne was concerned about the future of various community groups and in 2023 established a fund at Centre Foundation to continue her giving after her death. She was especially attached to the continuation of the 4-H summer camp for Pennsylvania youth.
Anne was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Robert Heinsohn; her twin sister, Alyce Lienhard; and sister, Helen Chiu. She is survived by daughters, Janet (husband, Robert Glass), of Albuquerque, NM, and Beth Heinsohn (husband, Andrew Cohen), of Jersey City, NJ; grandchildren, Abigail Cohen, Jack Cohen, Rachel Glass, Sarah Glass and Laura Glass (husband, Richard Curtin); and great-grandson Xenofon.
A service of remembrance will be held Saturday, December 14, at 11 a.m., at St. Andrew's Church in State College. The Rev. Jeffrey Packard will officiate with Gwen Catchen as organist. The service will also be live-streamed on the church's Facebook page (
