Charles Mong Obituary

Charles (Chuck) Clayton Mong

August 17, 1935 - March 29, 2025

Rock Spring, Pennsylvania - Charles Clayton "Chuck" Mong, 89, of Rock Spring, PA, died on March 29, 2025. Born in Altoona, he was the son of Daniel L. and Dorothy Fluke Mong. Chuck married the love of his life, Irene Heeter, in 1955. They shared 69 years of marriage before Irene's passing just 100 days earlier.

Chuck served in the U.S. Air Force. Upon discharge, he spent his life promoting business, economic development, and tourism in Centre County. He held leadership roles with the State College Chamber of Commerce, Centre County Industrial Development Corporation, and as President of the Chamber of Business and Industry of Centre County. He also worked as an aide to PA Senator J. Doyle Corman, Jr., and U.S. Congressman William Clinger. He served on numerous committees throughout his career.

Active community, Chuck was a Mason and a Shriner. He was involved with the Jaycees and the Nittany Knights barbershop chorus. In retirement, he became an auctioneer and ran Mong's Auctions. He was Santa at the Nittany Mall and Logan Valley Mall for many years. He was an outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, spelunking, and gardening. His greatest joy was traveling with Irene, pursuing adventure in Europe and the U.S.

In addition to his beloved Irene, Chuck was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters Mary Anne Mong (1929-1931), and Nancy Mong Park (1932 -2014). He is survived by his son C. David Mong (Many, LA) and daughter Mary Anne Mong (Altoona); grandchildren Derek Mong, Lindsey Mong Chauvin (both of LA), and Rebecca Ziegler (Altoona); five great-grandchildren; and extended family and friends.

After being in love for 73 years, it is only fitting that we celebrate Chuck and Irene Mong's amazing lives together. We hope you will join our family in a Celebration of Life on Saturday, June 14, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Baileyville Community Hall, 210 Deibler Road, Pennsylvania Furnace.

In honor of Chuck's lifelong commitment to this community and his concern for families struggling with housing, donations in his memory may be made to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Centre County, Inc. (HFHGCC).
