Edward Washell Obituary

Edward J. Washell

September 16, 1936 - November 10, 2025

State College, Pennsylvania - Edward J. Washell, 89, passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family, on November 10, 2025, at The Atrium, at The Village at Penn State.

Born on September 16, 1936, in Beccaria, Pennsylvania, Ed was a son of the late Joseph and Luby (Lutchko) Washell. On June 29, 1963, he married the late Betty Jane Shadle whom he was married to for 56 years.

After graduating high school in Beccaria, he served in the United States Air Force from 1954 to 1957. Ed then settled in State College with Betty and worked for HRB Singer as an engineer.

Ed was a beloved father, brother, and grandfather. He is survived by his two sons, Ed Washell and his wife Stacie, and Bill Washell and his wife Deana; his brothers, Joe Washell, Jim Washell and his sisters, Patricia Burmeister, and Judy (and Thomas) Hrzic. The lights of his life were his grandchildren - Samantha, Jesse, Sara, Mollie (and James) Heustess, and Sydney.

Raised in a tight-knit community, Ed's upbringing in a Catholic family instilled in him a deep-seated faith. He was a devoted family man, spending many an evening sitting on the swing outback with his wife Betty, reading the paper, or working in his garden.

Ed's passion for sports and community service was demonstrated through his many years of volunteering for the American Legion and coaching Little League. His dedication to the sport of baseball and to the development of young athletes was unmatched. He had the rare ability to inspire and encourage, teaching not only the fundamentals of baseball but also the values of teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship.

An avid golfer, Ed spent many a sunny day on the greens at the Elks, drinking his ginger brandy, reveling in the camaraderie of the game. His friendly demeanor made him a favorite among his golfing partners, and his kind spirit made every round more enjoyable, regardless of the score.

Upon retirement, Ed focused on the role of beloved grandfather. Spending as much time as he could with his grandchildren, he was always eager to babysit, as well as, attend all of their sporting events, dance recitals, plays, and concerts. Supportive and loving, he was their number one cheerleader in all they did - a constant presence in their lives.

Ed's life was a testament to the impact that one individual can have on so many. He will be deeply missed by his family, his friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His memory will be cherished and kept alive through the stories shared, the lessons taught, and the love he gave so freely. May he rest in peace with his beloved wife, Betty, knowing that his legacy of love will continue to flourish in the lives of those he touched.

A mass will be held at 11 am on Friday, November 21st, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in State College, PA, with Father George presiding.
