Helen Janet Felter Smith

Helen Janet Felter Smith Born 6 July, 1927, in Jamestown, N.Y., to Durand Felter and Helen Olsen Felter. Janet Smith spent her early years in Jamestown and Syracuse, N.Y., before her family settled in West Springfield, Mass. She graduated from West Springfield High School and subsequently attended American International College in Springfield, Mass. where she met Ollie Smith, from Bridgewater, Maine, whom she married in 1948. Janet and Ollie had four children and lived in the Springfield area until 1976, where Janet enjoyed being a full time mom and cub scout leader. They relocated to Johnstown in 1976. While in Johnstown, Janet and Ollie joined Westmont United Methodist Church and became active members there. Janet, who had a lifelong interest in early childhood education, began working full time in Johnstown at the daycare center where she spent 12 years before retiring with Ollie in 1989. Janet and Ollie spent their retirement years tending their vegetable and flower garden, traveling to England, France, Scotland, Canada and wintering in Venice, Fla. for 17 years. Janet relocated to Brookline Village in State College following Ollie's death in 2012. Janet is survived by her sister, Marylou Nadeau; brothers, Jim and Jack Felter; children, Wayne R. Smith, of Hastings on Hudson, N.Y., married to Jessica Indig-Smith, Martha Smith, of Naples, Fla.; Eric Smith, of State College, married to Dr. Sigrid Bingenheimer, and Ruth Plummer married to Dr. Simon Plummer, of Newport on Tay, Scotland; and four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Carter P. Smith scholarship at Hastings High School, One Mount Hope Boulevard, Hastings-on-Hudson, NY 10706 or to McGill University, The Carter Smith Fund, 1430 Peel Street, Montreal, QC H3A 3T3 Canada, for her grandson who predeceased her.
