John Horgas

John Horgas February 6, 1917 -November 13, 2005 John Horgas, 88, of Morann, died Sunday, Nov. 13, 2005, at Altoona Hospital. Born Feb. 6, 1917, in Ginter, he was the son of Joseph and Anna (Deao) Horgas. He was married to Mary (Witkosky) Horgas on May 24, 1941, in St. Barbara's Catholic Church, Houtzdale. She preceded him in death on March 7, 2003. He was employed as a coal miner until his retirement. He was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Council No. 10376 Knights of Columbus, Clearfield Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and United Mine Workers. He had been a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps and had served as a forest fire warden. He was a member of Christ The King Catholic Church, Houtzdale. Surviving are his children, Mrs. Charles (Elaine) Marhefka, of Apollo, Joseph Horgas and his wife Teresa, of Duncansville, Mrs. Edward (Carole) Roman, of Duncansville, Mrs. James (Linda) Bardi, of Douglasville, Mrs. Phillip (Catherine) Kerfoot, of Morann, John P. Horgas Jr. and his wife Cynthia, of Philipsburg, William Horgas and his wife Kimberly, of State College, James (Rick) Horgas, of Mechanicsburg, and Rev. Robert Horgas, of Falls Creek; 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; siblings, Bertha Tomkiewicz, of Munhall, Ann Stone, of Ohio, Rosemarie Gresh, of Bedford Heights, Ohio, and Raymond Horgas, of Maple Heights, Ohio; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, an infant daughter, four brothers, Joseph, George, Edward, and Eugene, and sisters, Margaret Yaclosky, Emma Edward, Helen Durkey and Suzanne Sanfallipo. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2005, and from 9-10:30 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005, at the Birger A. Freeberg Funeral Home, Houtzdale. The Rosary will be recited at 1:45 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home by the Knights of Columbus. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005, at the Christ The King Catholic Church, Houtzdale, with Father Robert Horgas as celebrant. Interment will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery, Houtzdale.
