Phillip Zimmerman Obituary

Phillip D. Zimmerman Phillip D. Zimmerman, 89, of State College, formerly of Erie, passed peacefully on Sunday, September 9, 2018, surrounded by family. His bright eyes, easy smile, great sense of humor, commitment to family, and love of learning, will be greatly missed. Phil was born in Erie, the son of the late Charles and Lillian McClintock Zimmerman. Phil married the great love of his life, Shirley Lindstrom Zimmerman while a student at The Pennsylvania State University. She preceded him in death in 1988. Phil is survived by his daughter, Leslee Zimmerman, of Chatham, Mass.; son, Jeffrey Zimmerman, his wife, Deborah, of Breckenridge, Colo.; his cherished grandchildren, Bradley Zimmerman and Cora Zimmerman, both of Breckenridge, Colo., and several nieces and nephews. Phil is also survived by dear friend Joanne Weaver, and the loving Weaver family. In addition to his parents and wife, Phil was preceded in death by his two brothers, Charles Zimmerman and Roger Zimmerman. Phil graduated from The Pennsylvania State University, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Commerce in 1952. In 1970, he completed the Program for Management Development, from the Graduate School of Business Administration at Harvard University. Phil retired as Vice President of Marketing, from AMSCO International in 1988. He started a second career as a consultant to the CEO of Kinetics Biomedical Services in 1993. He eventually moved to State College, home of his beloved Nittany Lions. Phil was an active member of the State College Presbyterian Church; former president of the Presque Isle Rotary Club; and member of Sons of the American Legion Post 245. He was a member of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, the Penn State Quarterback Club, and the Smeal College Alumni Society Board of Directors, where he mentored graduate business and MBA students, and the Hammond Society of Smeal College. Phil was also an adviser to Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week and volunteered as an adviser for the PA Easter Seal Society. Phil was a sportsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing in his free time. He was an avid Penn State sports fan and considered a day stomping around in the woods to be almost as good as an afternoon in Beaver Stadium. He was also a talented woodworker, and created many special furniture pieces for his family. A memorial service will be at 1:00 pm, Friday, September 21, 2018, at the State College Presbyterian Church, 132 W. Beaver Ave., State College, with Rev. Dean Lindsey officiating. Burial will be at the family's convenience. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Foundation for Free Enterprise Education (PFEW), 3076 W. 12th St., Erie PA 16505, or State College Presbyterian Church, 132 W. Beaver Ave., State College, PA 16801 in memory of Phillip D. Zimmerman. Arrangements are under the care of Koch Funeral Home, State College.

I am so sad to learn of your passing, my friend. We spent a lot of time together on session at church, and shared so many good chats. Your stories of love and life I will always cherish. Our greatest bond, submarines. I served with pride, as did your brother. I returned home safely. He did not. His submarine was one of the 52 lost during WWII. Your love for him and his memories, and your support of the museum in Connecticut reflected such incredible brotherhood. Rest well my friend, and I guess if I am ever on session again, I'll have to find another trouble making buddy.

Leslie, Jeff and family,
My Mom just called me and told me that Phil had passed away. My Mom and Dad (Will and Pauline Schuldt) were good friends with Phil and Shirley for many years. I worked for and with Phil at Amsco from 1975, when I joined the company, until 1988 when Phil retired from Amsco. Phil had great wit, intelligence and passion for Amsco and its' people. Millions of healthcare patients and care givers benefited directly from the work that Phil did. He was a tough task master for sure but so many of us were the better for Phil's influence and guidance in our lives. May God's peace be with you all. Eric and Carol Schuldt

Leslee and Jeff, your mom and dad were the best! The Z's laughter and humor was contagious and always a highlight of Erie. Uncle Phil, give Aunt Shirley a big hug for me! Sending much love....

Phil was such a great guy. I remember feeling nervous coming up for my first board meeting. Phil was so welcoming. He made you feel so special when he spoke with you. The world would be a better place with more people like Phil. I'm grateful for the time I knew ya...Rest in Peace Phil!
