Robert Basalla
September 14, 1936 - May 14, 2021
Port Matilda, Pennsylvania - Robert Michael "Mickey "Zedo" Basalla, 84, of Port Matilda, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, May 14, 2021, at home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born September 14, 1936, in Clarence, PA. A son of the late Joseph Basalla Sr. and Mary (Kirko) Basalla. On July 25, 1959, at the Byzantine Catholic Church in Clarence, PA, he married Verna (Gomola) Basalla who survives at home. This year they would have celebrated 62 years of marriage.
Robert served his Country in the United States Army earning the rank of Specialist Third Class. He received his honorable discharge in 1957.
Mick started his own construction company in 1962. Basalla Homes is continuing to be a family owned business operated by his sons.
He was a member of the Clarence American Legion Post 813, Loyal Order of the Moose in Clarence, Lodge 1565, and the Mosquito Creek Sportsmen's Club in Frenchville, PA.
Mickey enjoyed looking for sheds, hunting, and spending time out at his camp "Beaver Dam Camp". Most Importantly, he loved spending time with his wonderful family, especially all the grandchildren.
Throughout his life he fought a brave battle against multiple cancers. To say he was strong is an understatement. He was a dedicated father and husband, proud grandfather, and a loyal friend who will be remembered and cherished by all.
Robert is survived by his wife Verna and their four children: Kathryn (Michael) Burke of Warriors Mark, John (Donna) Basalla of Port Matilda, Robert Basalla Jr., of Port Matilda, and Cindy Walk of Port Matilda; nine grandchildren, Corey Burke (Megan Hill) of Warriors Mark, Chad (Kacee) Burke of Port Matilda, John (Kayla) Basalla of Runville, Skylar (Evan) Diehl of Howard, Brittany (Gregg) Dunn of Camas, WA, Katelyn Basalla (Aaron Sallade) of Warriors Mark, Brandon Walk of Port Matilda, Nash Walk of Port Matilda, and Piney Walk of Port Matilda; eleven great-grandchildren, Alison, Piper, Meadow, Byron, Cooper, Beau, Leland, Nova, Lydia, Arlen, and Avery. He is also survived by his three sisters, Rose Granite of Clarence, Mary Jane (Paul) Davidson of Runville, and Patsy (Ken) Holden of Philipsburg.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Joseph and David Basalla; sister, Pauline Verbiak; two great-grandsons, Roy and William Burke.
Family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19, 2021, at the Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral Home, 1034 Benner Pike, State College, PA. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 20, 2021, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 820 Westerly Parkway, State College, with Father Neil Dadey officiating.
Burial with full military honors will follow at the Friends Cemetery, Rt. 550 between Stormstown and Warriors Mark.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Cartwright/Martin Honor Guard POST 813, P.O. Box 342, Clarence, PA 16829 or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
