Wesley Hymer Obituary

Dr. Wesley "Wes" Craig Hymer

July 22, 1935 - May 4, 2025

State College, Pennsylvania - Dr. Wesley "Wes" Craig Hymer, aged 89, passed away peacefully at his home, May 4, 2025, in Boalsburg, Pennsylvania. Born July 22, 1935, in Iron Belt, Wisconsin, Wes was a man of extraordinary intelligence, thoughtfulness, and humility. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, educator, and friend whose legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Wes completed his illustrious educational journey at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, where he earned a Bachelor of Science, followed by a Master's Degree, and culminating in a PhD in Biochemistry. His passion for science, research, and education led him to a distinguished career at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) followed by 35 years as a Professor of Biochemistry at Penn State University, where he inspired countless students with his wisdom and dedication to the pursuit of knowledge.

Family was the cornerstone of Wes's life. He's survived by his devoted spouse of 64 years, Marge Hymer; and their four sons, Tom, Ron, Mike, and Dan. Wes was a beloved father-in-law to Tina, Ann, Inna, Teresa; and grandfather to Alice, Max, Stacy, Christina, Amanda, Will, Ross, Derek, Cole, and Bryce. Each family member (including his Down syndrome Brother-in-law Earl Laun) was touched by his gentle guidance and unwavering support, creating a family bond that was strong and enduring.

Wes was a man of many interests, finding joy and relaxation in activities that challenged the mind and body. He was an avid tennis and squash player, a dedicated fan of Penn State Football and Basketball, and a talented Muskie fisherman. Evenings were often spent playing cribbage, California Rummy, or ping-pong. Wes also spent many evenings reading Science Magazine.

His impact on others was broad. Those who knew Wes would describe him as a beacon of intelligence, always ready to engage in thoughtful discussion on a myriad of topics. His selfless nature was evident in his willingness to lend an ear or a helping hand to anyone in need. He was a man who led by example, teaching not only through his words but through his actions.

As we say goodbye to Wes, we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by profound accomplishments and deep human connections. Wes's memory will be treasured by his family, friends, colleagues, and students, whose lives have been enriched by his presence. His legacy of kindness, humility, and passion for life and science will continue to inspire all who knew him.

A memorial celebrating Wes's life will be held Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at the Boalsburg Firehouse (113 East Pine Street, Boalsburg, PA) starting at 2 p.m.

Dear family of Dr. Hymer...I am so saddened to hear about his passing. What a wonderful teacher and mentor he was to me as I worked in his lab from 1973-76. His kindness has stayed with me all these years later.
