Florence McDaniel Rhodes ESTILL, SC - Mrs. Florence McDaniel Rhodes of Estill, SC died Thursday morning, February 25, 2010, after an extended illness. Born Nov. 22, 1919, in Walterboro, SC, she was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson McDaniel and Florence Ellis McDaniel. She was a Magna Cum Laude graduate from Coker College at the age of 19, a 1st Honor Graduate and a member of Coker College Honor Society. She had retired after 25 years as a teacher and librarian in the Estill Public School system, was a former member of the Estill Reading Club and a member of Lawtonville Baptist Church. Married to the late John Thomas Rhodes, she is survived by two sons: Tommy Rhodes and wife Sandy of Estill and John Rhodes and wife Phyllis of Hampton; two daughters, Flo Mathis and husband Buzz of Chapin, SC, and Becky Elliott and husband Miles of Estill. There are nine grandchildren, Scott Rhodes of Beaufort, Shannan Miller of Barnwell, Kevin Mathis of San Diego, CA, Michael Mathis of Estill, Chrissy Brunson of Hampton, Jennifer Rhodes of Bluffton, William Rhodes of Johns Island, Elizabeth Queen of Lipan, TX, and McCarten Elliott of Estill and 12 great-grandchildren, Nathan Miller, Price Miller, Zack Mathis, Gabe Mathis, Mikell T. Mathis, Cole Mathis, Amelia Brunson, Virginia Brunson, Elliott Queen, Katherine Queen, Kate Rhodes and Jane Rhodes. She was predeceased by five siblings: T. J. McDaniel, W. P. (Billy) McDaniel, Evelyn McDaniel Bryant, Marjorie (Ninkie) McDaniel Brailsford and Frances McDaniel Hood. A graveside funeral service will be held Sunday, February 28, 2010, at 3 p.m., in the Lawtonville Cemetery, conducted by Rev. Dr. Jamie Norris. Friends may call at her residence, 265 5th Street, Estill, SC 29918, between the hours of 5 and 7 p.m., on Saturday.
