Alfred Smith Obituary

Alfred E. Smith
Mr. Smith, age 81, of Charlotte, passed away Thursday, November 12, 2009. He lived his last two years at the NC State Veterans Home in Salisbury. Born September 10, 1928 in Sanford, NC, he was a son of the late Graden and Beulah Womack Smith. Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict (November 1950 - August 1952). He was Private 1st Class and helped with the injured soldiers in the medic tent. He married Ruth Elizabeth Mimms of Broadway, NC. They moved to Charlotte in 1963. Mr. Smith became employed with KPC and retired after thirty years of service. He and Ruth had two children, Gregory and Tammy. In his later years, Mr. Smith was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Ruth did a wonderful job taking care of him at home until her health deteriorated. She passed away earlier this year after being a loyal and faithful wife, friend and caregiver. Mr. Smith is survived by a daughter, Tammy; son-in-law, Paul; and granddaughter, Ella Ruth. He is also survived by a niece, Anita Harry and her family of Sanford. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a son, Greg; two brothers, Grady and Bryce; and a sister, Haline Kelly.
A private graveside service will be held at Sunset Memory Gardens.
The family wishes to express a special thank you to Mr. Smith's longtime friend, Rodney, for his care, support and visits during this much needed time. Many thanks to Brenda Kay for keeping the family cat. Also, deepest appreciation for all of the love and support from Aunt Martha, Cousin Sylvia and long-time friends Em and Everette throughout the years.
Memorials may be made to the Parkinson Association of the Carolinas, P.O. Box 33053, Charlotte, NC 28223, or to a Caregivers Awareness program of your choice.
