Alida Armstrong Obituary

Alida Stevenson Armstrong
Mrs. Armstrong, 79, of Plantation Estates, Matthews, NC, died Friday, December 23, 2005 at Plantation Estates of declining health. Memorial service will be 2:00 PM on Monday, December 26, 2005 at First Presbyterian Church in Monroe with Ministers Kevin Wainwright and Larry Watts officiating. Interment will follow at Lakeland Memorial Park in Monroe. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 PM on Monday, December 26, 2005 at First Presbyterian Church of Monroe.
Mrs. Armstrong was born on August 16, 1926, in Columbia, SC, daughter of the late Mrs. Edna Staton Stevenson and Mr. Bright L. Stevenson. Mrs. Armstrong attended the Columbia City schools, and graduated from Winthrop College in 1946 with a B.A. degree in Elementary Education. Following graduation, she taught kindergarten for several years in Bristol, Tennessee.
She married Hugh W. Armstrong in 1950, and joined him at the University Of Georgia School Of Veterinary Medicine. She taught first grade at the University of Georgia in the Demonstration School on the Normal School campus for three years before moving to Monroe, N.C. in 1953, while her husband established the Monroe Animal Clinic and later the Armstrong Animal Hospital. Mrs. Armstrong taught first grade briefly at John D. Hodges Elementary School and was a substitute teacher for many years in the Monroe City Schools. She was a loving wife and Mother and a devoted member of First Presbyterian Church of Monroe where she served as an Elder, a Sunday School teacher, and an active member of the Women of the Church. She was a past member of The Chataugua Book Club, The Monroe Garden Club, and Beta Sigma Phi Service Sorority.
Mrs. Armstrong is survived by her husband of 55 years, Dr. Hugh W. Armstrong; son, Rankin Armstrong and his wife, Debbi, of Myrtle Beach, SC; daughter, Ann Armstrong McGhee and her husband, Karl, of Pittsburgh, PA; granddaughters, Sara Staton McGhee and Erin Emery McGhee of Pittsburgh, PA; sisters, Mildred Lomas and her husband, Blake, Frances Scott and Billie Stevenson, all of Columbia, SC, and Iris Waters and her husband, Everett, of Bryson City, NC; and brothers, B.L. Stevenson, Jr. of Eastover, SC, Robert Stevenson, Jimmy Stevenson and John Stevenson of Columbia, SC; and devoted friend and caregiver, Mrs. Clara Morrow, of Mineral Springs, NC. She was preceded in death by her sister, Doris Stevenson, of Columbia, SC.
The family would like to give their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Plantation Estates Medical Care Unit for their many years of dedication, support and love.

I found out on Christmas Day that Alida had passed away. I am so sorry but so happy that we all know where she is. I will write each of you a note but wanted to get something to you quickly. Love from Mother, Alice and me. -Anna
