Augusta Bell Obituary

Augusta Grove Bell, of Reno, NV and formerly of Charlotte, died March 25, 2003 in Reno. She was born September 25, 1926 in Nocona, TX to Thelma and Donald Grove. In 1946, after graduating with high honors in journalism from the University of Texas, she married Carlos Goodwin Bell.
The Bells lived two and a half years in Belem in the Amazon Valley. While living in Evanston, IL, Augusta earned an M.A. in literature at Northwestern University in 1957.
In Oak Ridge, TN from 1958-1970, Augusta worked for the public library and later as county reporter for The Oak Ridger. That work led to her regional Appalachain history, Circling Windrock Mountain, (University of TN Press, 1997)-her salute to the early, colorful East Tennessee miners and families.
In Charlotte from 1970-1999, Augusta was first a reporter for the Gastonia Gazette. At Central Piedmont Community College from 1978-1994, she taught journalism, ESL composition, fulltime English, and Bell innovations such as "Writers, Revolutionaries and Big Brother," the WAC program, and Computer Composition. As its first full-time Director, she was the force behind the Writing Center for 13 years. Her 1994 Retirement was another challenge met with big hopes for big ideas--and a syllabus.
Mrs. Bell is survived by her husband, Dr. Carlos Bell of Reno, NV; a daughter, Charlotte, and husband Peter Golden of Victoria, BC; a son, Don, and wife Christine of Ridgecrest, CA; granddaughters Julia Lynn Golden and Darcy Lorraine Golden of Victoria; two Oklahoma nieces and three Texas nephews.

Carlos ... and family ... I am so sorry to hear about Augusta. I still remember my son, Scott, cutting the grass at your place just off of campus at UNC Charlotte. You BOTH were SO good to him. My sincere condolences to you and all family members!
