Beverley Allison Obituary

Beverley Heyl Allison GORDONSVILLE, VA - Beverley Heyl Allison, 83, died peacefully at her home on Monday, October 22, 2012. She was born on December 16, 1928, in Washington, D.C. and had been a resident of Sleepy Hollow, near Somerset, Virginia, since 1950. She was the only child of Charles Heath Heyl, Jr. and Helen Stanford Heyl, and step-daughter of Earl Donaldson. She was raised in Washington, D.C. and Montreal, Canada. Beverley was formerly married to Neville Monroe Allison, Moody, Texas, with whom she had five children, and Robin Roger, deceased. Beverley attended the University of Delaware and worked in the news industry, including for ABC News Bureau in Washington D.C. She began foreign mission work in the mid 1970's, helping to create a new branch of the South American Missionary Society, working mostly in Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. This led to her work with the Bishop of Honduras, establishing the Committee to Assist the Episcopal Diocese of Honduras in the mid 1980's and later Our Little Roses Foreign Mission Society, where she had served as executive director to the time of her death. Beverley was a long-time, devoted worshiper at Christ Episcopal Church, Gordonsville, Virginia. She served multiple terms on the vestry, was one of the founding members of Daughters of the King, and was a long-term member of the Altar Guild and the Outreach Guild. Beverley is survived by four children and their spouses, ten grandchildren, two grand-daughters in law, and two great grandchildren: son Roe Allison, his wife, Dee, and their sons, Neville, his wife, Bethany, and son Brandon; son David Heyl, his wife , Elizabeth, their son Charlie, his wife, Sarah, and daughters Annie and Eliza; son Stan Allison, his wife, Nan, their daughter, Mary Hopkins, and son, Turner; and daughter Dorsey Comer, her husband, Donny, daughter Kate and grand daughter Charlotte, daughter Heather and grandson Brentlee, and son James. Beverley was preceded in death by her parents and step-father, son Gregory, grandson Heath Allison and former husband Robin Roger. Beverley had a keen mind and a kind heart, and was interested in all things around her. She was recognized for the energy she devoted to many charitable causes and for her caring, selfless concern for family and community. She was a talented gardener who gained much peace from frequent hours spent outdoors pursuing that passion. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, October 27, at Christ Episcopal Church, Gordonsville; interment will be private. The family will host visitors after the service at Sleepy Hollow. Memorials may be made to the Beverley Allison Memorial Fund of Our Little Roses Foreign Mission Society, P.O. Box 464, Somerset, VA 22972.

I'm 47 years old and still remember she wrote my two favorite books. Mitzy's Magic Garden and a book about a pet giraffe. I've been looking for those books every where. She sure captured my attention and love for books with those two books when I was in 3rd grade. God be with you all. Patty Irish

Bev was such a good friend and a terrific example for all of us who were fortunate to really know her. Mostly we visited by telephone about our friends and our work in Honduras.Always she took time to chat, encourage and inspire me in my life and work as a volunteer teacher in Honduras. I already miss her so.

Bev was one in a million. I have known her since 1995. She made a huge difference in the lives of so many, especially in the girls of Our Little Roses. Although I haven't seen her often since we left Honduras we have maintained contact around our mutual passion for the girls. I will always remember her passionate service to those who are less fortunate. Pedro and I loved her and send our deepest condolences at this sad time.

What a great lady Beverley Allison was, touching everyone with her honest good humor! Recently I travelled to Somerset, England with pictures from Somerset, VA featuring Bev, her B & B and the surroundings. She epitomized all that is good about our area and she will be so missed.
