Carl Fisher Obituary

Carl Holmes Fisher
'Bud'
Mr. Fisher, age 78, of Charlotte, NC died January 4, 2009 at Presbyterian Hospital in Matthews, NC. Carl was Born August 8, 1930 in Concord, NC, son of the late Gillon and Grace Fisher of Concord. Carl graduated from Cannon High School in 1948. After High School he graduated from Oak Ridge Military Academy where he was awarded a scholarship for his exemplary life as a cadet. He attended NC State University before enlisting in the US Air Force for four years. Carl was a waist gunner during the Korean War, and was a Turent Gunner on B-52 Bombers and B29's. He was awarded his wings while flying and received the Good Conduct Award. To say that he was proud to be an American is an understatement. After his son Steven was born, Carl took an early retirement from the Air Force. He had a high regard for our active and retired military personnel. This value was carried over to his wife, children, and grandchildren, who always knew that Dad would be the first on their street to put the American flag on the front of the house on the appropriate and special days, standing back after it was hung to salute her proudly!
Carl married his high school sweetheart Margaret Gaither, lovingly nicknamed Micki, on June 2, 1951. They were married in Denver, CO where Carl was then stationed. Micki traveled by train from Kannapolis, NC to her fiance for the ceremony. Carl was an active and devoted member of Providence United Methodist Church for forty five years, where he and Micki taught Sunday School at each age level of their children as they grew up, and then became Youth Counselors as their children entered their youth. He was involved with setting up one of the very first Boy Scout programs at Providence where he devoted his time with their programs, fundraisers, and trips. His Wesley Men's Sunday School Class was dear to his heart, and he sang in their quartet. Carl enjoyed volunteering as an Usher at Providence, with 29 years of service, most recently eight years as head usher. He also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, Room-in-the-Inn and the Red Cross.
Carl was also a proud Shriner of the Oasis Temple. He continued his musical love by playing the snare drum, named Micki, in their band. Carl was a mechanical engineer by Profession, he retired from Sunlife Systems. Prior to Sunlife he worked at Metrolina Builders and Black and Decker.
Carl is survived by his wife, Micki Fisher; son, Steven C. Fisher CAPT, USN (RET) and wife Margaret of Springfield, VA; daughter, Lisa F. Ludes and husband, Mark J. Ludes Sr. of Charlotte, NC; sister, Phyllis Towell and husband Pete of Fayetteville, GA; grandchildren, Eric S. Fisher of Arlington, VA, Gregory C. Fisher 1st Lt. USMC stationed at New River Air Station, NC, Stephen C. Rabey of Charlotte, Alexandra D. Rabey of Charlotte, Matthew G. Fisher of Springfield, VA and Virginia M. Fisher of Springfield, VA; step-grandchildren, Ellen Moschella and husband Phillip of Johns Island, SC, Joe Ludes Jr. and wife, Jeannette of Takoma Park, MD; step-greatgrandchildren, Dominic Moschella of Johns Island, SC, Mary Sue Moschella of Johns Island, SC and Jack Soon-Ludes of Takoma Park, MD; devoted former daughter-in-law, Jan L. Fisher of Gaithersburg, MD; nephew, Bill Webb and wife, Ann of Alexandria, VA; and Carl's Uncle, Jason C. Fisher of Fresno, CA.
The family would like to extend their thanks and gratitude to the Doctors, Critical Care Nurses, and Palliative Care, Hospice unit at Presbyterian Hospital of Matthews.
A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday January 10, 2009 at Providence United Methodist Church, 2810 Providence Rd., Charlotte. NC 28211 with the Rev. Dr. Ken Carter, Rev.
