Charlie Lucille Davis Butler

Mrs. Charlie Lucille Davis Butler, 73, of Charlotte, passed away on Saturday, June 1, 2002 at Britthaven Nursing Home. She was born February 5, 1929 in Fayetteville and grew up in Oxford, NC. She was the daughter of the late Reverend Hermon S. Davis and Owena H. Davis.
Charlie graduated from Fisk University in Nashville, TN at the age of 18 and received her Masters Degree from Harvard University. She also studied at Julliard School of Music and Amherst College. Charlie taught piano at Fisk University early in her career and later at home while her children were younger. She was a professor of music at Johnson C. Smith University for 26 years until her retirement in 1988.
Charlie is survived by her husband of 50 years, retired physician Dr. Joseph L. Butler; her sister, Mrs. Grace A. Richmond of Chicago, IL; her sons, both of Charlotte, Joseph D. Butler and wife, Julia and Owen B. Butler; and beautiful granddaughters, Charlie and Candace Butler.
A memorial service will be held at 12 noon Wednesday, June 5, 2002 at Statesville Avenue Presbyterian Church, 3435 Nevin Road, Charlotte, NC 28269, with Rev. Michael Robinson officiating. The Eulogy will be delivered by lifelong family friend, Rev. Wilburn M. Sanders. Memorials may be made to the church's Loaves and Fishes fund.
