Claudette Smith
October 16, 1937 - July 2, 2022
Monroe, North Carolina - Claudette Helms Smith, 84, of Monroe, NC passed away on Saturday July, 2, 2022. She was born on October 16, 1937 daughter to the late James L. and Maude Smith Helms. She is also preceded in death by her loving husband H. Letcher Smith, as well as her sister Joyce Melton.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM Thursday, July 7, 2022 at Lee Park Church, 2491 Morgan Mill Road, Monroe, NC 28110 with burial to follow in Lakeland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00PM until 8:00PM Wednesday, July 6, 2022 at Gordon Funeral Service and Crematory, 1904 Lancaster Ave, Monroe, NC 28112.
Claudette is survived by her son Olin L. Smith wife Judy, brother, Jimmy Helms, two granddaughters; Amber Smith Eubanks, husband Josh, Tiffany Smith Thompson, husband Darryl, great-grandchildren; Landon and Camden Thompson, Braxton, Brayden and Jackson Eubanks, McKenzie Hernandez and many nieces and nephews.
After a senior trip to Washington DC, she was employed by the City of Monroe in 1955. She worked with the City in various capacities starting as Assistant Tax Collector. In 1958 she was promoted to City Manager's office as secretary and Assistant City Clerk. She was promoted to City Clerk in 1976 and Assistant City Manager in 1981. She retired June 30, 1993. Her position at retirement was Assistant City Manager, City Clerk and Personnel Director. During her employment with the city, several college courses were taken but a degree was never attained. Her entire career was with the city in various jobs. The total employment was always challenging.
Claudette and her husband retired together in June of 1993 and planned to travel together. After her husband's passing she continued as they planned upon retirement to enjoy life and travel; she joined Charlotte Friendship Force and participated in exchanges to New Zealand, Indonesia, Bali, Singapore and Australia. She participated in domestic exchanges as well to Iowa and Colorado. Claudette took many trips on her own as well, venturing to Russia, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, France, England, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Vatican, Sicily, Alaska, Hawaii. Costa Rica. Caribbean Islands, Southern Caribbean, Nova Scotia and Canada.
Claudette was a very active member of Lee Park Church, and served in various committees and positions. She was also a member of the Monroe Rotary Club. She enjoyed yard work and her time at her cabin on Lake Wateree. She loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them.
In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to Rotary Club of Monroe, 2722 W. Roosevelt Blvd, RHCC, Monroe, NC 28110 or Lee Park Church, 2491 Morgan Mill Road, Monroe, NC 28112.
