Corinne Abernethy Cole
July 2, 1926 - May 7, 2021
Charlotte, North Carolina - Corinne Abernethy Cole, 94, passed away peacefully May 7, 2021 at Southminster Retirement Community in Charlotte. She was born in Lincolnton, North Carolina, to Thomas Clay Abernethy and Mary Crowell Abernethy. Her grandfather, Dr. Lester Avant Crowell, Sr., founded Lincoln Hospital in Lincolnton, later named Gordon Crowell Memorial Hospital. She graduated from Greensboro Senior High and attended Stratford Junior College in Danville, Virginia graduating from UNC-G (Women's College) in 1947 with a degree in Sociology. She was employed at Family and Children's Service in Charlotte.
Corinne married Harrison D. Cole in 1948. Later she attended Central Piedmont Community College where she received a degree in Medical Records Technology and worked at Wake Medical in Raleigh for ten years. She and Harrison moved to Beech Mountain in 1992 where they enjoyed the cool weather (and formidable winters) for 13 years. While living there, she was employed at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Banner Elk.
She was predeceased by her husband, Harrison; her eldest daughter, Leslie; and her older sister, Jane Brewer of Greensboro. She is survived by her twin sister, Marty Stanley (Tom) of Sharon Towers in Charlotte; and her children, Martha Ann DeShazo (Dameron) of Pinehurst, NC, Harrison Cole, Jr. (Ginny Wheelock) of Charlotte, and Tracey Norris (Dennis) of Hurdle Mills, NC. She leaves five grandchildren, Corrie Thrasher (Bret) of Atlanta, Delos Elder of Honolulu, Jennie Ann Cole (Derek) of Raleigh, Jordan Smith (Blaine) of Raleigh, and Clayton Payne (Gretchen) of Charlotte; and seven great-grandchildren, Suzanna, Sydney, Marshall, Edie, Nora, Jack, and Gladys; and one great-great-granddaughter, Helen.
Corinne's family would like to express utmost gratitude and thanks to the nursing staff at Southminster: Michelle Berrette, Laresha Wayman, Sabrina Parrish, and Joy Dennis for their extraordinary love and support during the many years of care they bestowed on Corinne, and particularly the last year of COVID isolation endured by the whole community, and to Cheryl Skerlak, Southminster Resident/Family Life Manager for her guidance and patience through the years we were constantly calling for her advice. And special thanks to Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region for the excellent end of life care they provided.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, gifts be made to the Southminster Foundation, 8919 Park Rd, Charlotte, NC 29210. Robertson Funeral and Cremation Service is serving the family, www.throbertson.com.
