Curtis Rogers Obituary

Curtis Lee Rogers, Jr. CHARLOTTE - Curtis Lee Rogers, Jr., 76, of Charlotte, passed away Wednesday, September 17, 2014, at Presbyterian Hospital Main after a courageous, six month battle with lung cancer. At the time of his passing Curt was surrounded by his loving family. Curt was the son of the late Curtis Lee Rogers, Sr. and Betty Davis Rogers. Curt graduated from Myers Park High School in 1956 and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in 1960 where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He was a proud member of the Rams Club and a diehard fan of his beloved Tar Heels. After his graduation from UNC Curt joined the Curt L. Rogers Company, a food brokerage company that his father founded in 1934. The name was later changed to Rogers-American Company. Along with his brother-in-law Robert J. Maccubbin and countless loyal employees and family members, they built the company into one of the largest food brokerages in the country. Curt is survived by his wife of 50 years Alice Phillips Rogers; son Curtis Lee Rogers III and wife, Julie, of Johns Island, SC; daughter Mary Rogers Shumate and husband Sam of Charlotte; daughter Natalie Rogers Peterson and husband James of Charlotte. He is also survived by sister Connie Maccubbin and husband Bob Maccubbin of Charlotte; sister Betty McKee, wife of the late Jack McKee, of Charlotte; brother Bill Rogers and wife Robin of Summerville, SC; sister-in-law Candy Rogers of Davis, NC; aunt Mable Davis of Belmont and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Curt was "Poppa" and "Grandy" to his nine beloved grandchildren; Curtis Lee Rogers, IV, Beck Davis Rogers, Lillian Asbury Rogers, Samuel Scott Shumate, Jr., William Sutton Shumate, Oscar James "Jake" Peterson, V, Elizabeth Phillips Peterson, Ella Katherine Peterson and Pippa Rose Grace Peterson. An avid gardener, gifted woodworker and frustrated chef, he was a loving and generous human being who never knew a stranger. Curt fashioned his life as one who believed that he was put on this earth to help others in any manner possible. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses from the Cancer and Critical Care units at Presbyterian Hospital Main and the staff and friends at White Oak Manor of Waxhaw, who so graciously and compassionately cared for Curt over the course of his illness. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 20, 2014, at 2:00 PM at Carmel Presbyterian Church, Charlotte, where he and Alice have been members for more than 35 years. Interment will be private at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Weddington. Flowers are preferred; donations can be made to Carmel Presbyterian Church, 2048 Carmel Rd., Charlotte, NC. Arrangements are in the care of Heritage Funeral Home, Weddington Chapel. An online guestbook is available at www.heritagecares.net.

I have many fond memories of living next door to Mr. Rogers and the rest of the family. Most memorable about Mr. Rogers was his good humor and ready smile. He would always show up at the fence when Mike and I were shooting basketball. He'd say hi, see how we were doing, then take a long shot from his side of the fence. Those were great childhood days (for me) made better by a warm and friendly neighbor.

Dear Alice and Connie, I am grieving with you at the loss of this dear man. You and all of your family will be in my thoughts and prayers in the coming days.
I have such fond and funny memories of him lugging our heavy suitcases up lights of stairs during the church trip in 1990 to Germany and other places. May God bring comfort to you.
