Daniel Wise Obituary

Daniel Edwin Wise

March 27, 1943 - March 30, 2025

Greencastle, Indiana - Daniel Edwin Wise, M.D. passed away peacefully at his home in Greencastle, Indiana on Sunday, March 30th, 2025. He was surrounded by his wife of forty-one years, Candy Wise, and his children. The cause was complications of Parkinson's disease. He had just celebrated his 82nd birthday.

Dan was born March 27th, 1943 in Chillicothe, Ohio. His father, Willard, died suddenly from a cerebral aneurysm when Dan was six years old. He was raised by his mother, Marjorie. A playground accident at age eleven led to his left arm and hand being crippled, and he was in a cast for three years following multiple surgeries. This experience, coupled with the early passing of his father, would ultimately be what led Dan to pursue Cardiology. When his cast was finally removed, his mother sent him outside with a tennis racket. Dan excelled in athletics and became a tennis pro. After graduating from Muskingum College, Dan put himself through medical school at Ohio State University by teaching tennis.

After completing his residency and internship at UNC Chapel Hill and a fellowship in lipids at Johns Hopkins, Dan taught at the University of Florida Gainesville before returning to North Carolina, Settling in Charlotte, he became a beloved and successful cardiologist. He was a "physician's physician", often running late due to his dedication to each and every patient. Considered an expert in preventive cardiology he wore many hats, as a teacher, clinical researcher and leader in the cardiovascular field. He was an incredibly curious and dedicated physician and member of the medical community in Charlotte and the South East.

Dan spent his weekends with his children, whether on the golf course or tennis court. He bequeathed a love of athletics and a healthy lifestyle to his children. Dan practiced what he preached by following a healthy diet (including some desserts!), maintaining his fitness and practicing mindfulness. He was often on the treadmill in his cardiac rehab facility when patients began arriving at six am for therapy.

Dan's passion for medicine was only exceeded by his love of his family. He is survived by his wife Candace Cline Wise, and his four children: Tami Wise of Columbus, Ohio, Jeff Wise of New Milford Connecticut, Stephen Wise of Greencastle, Indiana, and Christopher Wise of Brooklyn, New York. He was the proud Papa to eight grandchildren, two of which arrived only a few weeks before his death. He was also the loving brother in law to Karen and George Wallace of Hendersonville, North Carolina, and Chip Cline of Matthews, North Carolina. He was an incredibly loving father in law to Lilah, Scott, Ashley and Daniele.

Gentle and unassuming, Dan was often behind his large camera, snapping photos of his children and grandchildren or delaying everyone on trips while awaiting that perfect shot. There are notorious Christmas morning family photos that will be cherished. He leaves thousands of photographs behind for his family to wade through.

Dan was a music lover and singer and for a while was a member of the choir at Myers Park Presbyterian Church. After long hours at the office, he decompressed in his much loved music room, listening to everything from Mozart to James Taylor to Barbra Streisand. Dan found great joy in the simple things; a nice glass of wine, a clean melody, and a good story. For a doctor, he had a savage sweet tooth, and often broke into his famous grin following bites of dessert. He could often be found dressed in scarlet and gray or light blue, rooting for his Buckeyes and Tarheels.

With a quiet fortitude and determination, Dan struck out on his own at the age of sixty-five and opened a private practice. Frustrated by a healthcare system that lacked personal attention, Dan created a thriving practice that offered personalized, dedicated treatment beloved by his patients. Dan practiced medicine in Pennsylvania for a year until he was diagnosed with Parkinson's in December of 2021.

A man of strong intellect, Dan's diagnosis proved a great challenge. He relied on his faith and his love of family in his final years, retiring to a home near his son and daughter-in-law's farm in Greencastle, Indiana. This heart doctor had a huge heart and a generous, loyal and gentle nature. He is missed by everyone that knew him.

Dan will be buried next to his parents in Columbus, Ohio in a small family service April 5th. A memorial service will be held at Myers Park Presbyterian Church in Charlotte on May 3 at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, Dan wished that donations be made in his memory to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research PO Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741 or online and The American Heart Association PO Box 840692 Dallas. TX 75284-0692 or online.

I just learned of Dans passing. He was one of the first physicians we met when my husband and I moved to NC that was in 1978. Because of his expertise and dedication to his patients my husband who had his first heart attack at age 30 lived another 5 years. Over the ensuing years, off and on I would require his expertise. He was always there he never forgot who I was and how much he helped our family. His dedication was unparalleled and will not be forgotten.

To Candy and his family, my sincere condolence´s. He was a good and caring man.

Dr. Wise was our cardiologist for the last two years of his practice. He was so kind and knowledgeable and always put us at ease. As transplants from Ohio we talked a lot about Ohio State and the Buckeyes and we so enjoyed our conversations. RIP Dr. Wise and our condolences to his family.

So sorry to hear about. Dr. Wise. Dr. Wise saved my life. I weighed 420 pounds and was in Preventive Cardiology. He made recommendations to me. He said if I followed his advice he could almost guarantee adding 20 more years to my life. Today, 18 years later and weighing 223. I am healthy and blessed. Such a great human and doctor. Will love you forever Sir!

Dr Wise took amazing care of us, starting in 2018 until he closed his practice in 2019. Not very long, but so impactful. He was an incredibly knowledgeable and compassionate clinician, who we surely miss. So sorry to hear of his passing. I can't think of another time we took pictures of a doctor - he meant that much to us. Pictured in November, 2019, and his nurse Mary.

I´m also a physician and enjoyed knowing Dr. Wise over the years, both as a colleague, and during his fine care of both of my parents, Reverend Dr. Raymond D. Scott and Barbara P. Scott. I am so incredibly sorry to hear of his passing. My thoughts and prayers to his family. Dr Wise was my preventative cardiologist in Charlotte from 2008-2009 when I moved out of state and was truly amazing and one of a kind. He helped figure something out when no one else did and was so kind and compassionate. He was truly a gem. I am sorry I moved away as no other has compared. May peace and comfort be with you all and I know it´s so difficult, cherish all of the wonderful memories of such a great man.

Dear Wise family - my heartfelt condolences on the loss of a truly giving man and excellent physician! Your beloved Dan took such good care of my dad, Ray Scott, until he passed away in 2010, and then later my mom, Barb Scott. They were both extremely fond of him and always considered him an excellent doctor and a compassionate human. What a terrific man! May your joyful memories bring much peace and comfort as you gather to celebrate a life so well-lived! Blessings to all.

I received notice of Mr. Wise´s passing through MPPC. Although I did not know him he was obviously a wonderful person and doctor. Whoever wrote his obituary did a lovely job. It was a beautiful tribute to a much-loved husband, father, and grandfather. I know he will be sorely missed.

I am sorry to hear of Dan's death. I hope the transition was peaceful and content surrounded by family. I pray for comfort, memories and God's security for all those living and love him. He was truly one the best diagnosticians I have ever known and hands down, the best lipidologist I have had the honor to study under and work with. Blessings and peace to all his loss has affected. No one on the east coast could surpass him in general cardiology. KBJ

Dr. Daniel Wise became my friend and Guru when he became my cardiologist in 2006 until he retired from that practice . . . He listened more than any doctor I had gone to in years and helped me with more than his specialty when other physicians dismissed real symptoms. He is someone I will never forget! RIP, Dr. Daniel Wise.

Dear Candy and family-
What a beautiful tribute to Dan. I learned a lot about him that I did not know. I did know what a wonderful cardiologist he was to Tim and how much Tim adored him and trusted him as a doctor. I am so very sorry to hear of this loss, but grateful to have known Dan as Tim`s doctor, a fellow church member and a former neighbor in Beverly Crest. I will look forward to giving you a hug on May 3, and I send prayers for comfort and peace at this difficult time.
Sincerely,
Margaret Croft.

Dan was a long time customer at my store, Camera World. He really enjoyed photography and was very good at it. He also was my wife's doctor for a while and was always very caring and never rushed during her visits. Dan was a credit to his community.
