Donald Knebusch Obituary

Donald Michael Knebusch

November 14, 1944 - November 17, 2025

Charlotte, North Carolina - Donald Michael "Don" Knebusch, 81, passed away on November 17, 2025, in Charlotte, North Carolina, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on November 14, 1944, in Wayne, Michigan, Don lived a life defined by service, devotion, and the joy he found in the people around him.

A proud graduate of The Citadel, Class of 1967, Don began a distinguished 20-year career in the United States Air Force, serving from 1967 to 1987. A Vietnam veteran and skilled pilot, he flew both the C-141 Starlifter and C-123 Provider aircraft as part of MAC (Military Airlift Command). He achieved the rank of Major and returned to his alma mater as a TAC Officer from 1973 to 1975, helping guide and mentor the next generation of cadets-an experience he spoke of often and with pride.

After retiring from the military, Don continued his life in aviation as a commercial pilot for TWA and later American Airlines, where he retired as a Captain. He cherished his years in the cockpit, the camaraderie of aviation, and the many friends he made along the way.

Don was known for his outgoing spirit and infectious energy. He was the life of the party, a natural storyteller with an unforgettable sense of humor. He never turned down a good meal, loved entertaining, and treasured every moment spent with family and friends. His devotion-to family, to friendship, and to his country-was at the core of who he was.

Don is survived by his loving wife, Bunny Knebusch; his children, Ken Knebusch (wife Susie), Patrick Knebusch (wife Laura), and Chris Knebusch; his cherished grandchildren, Emma (and her husband Jack Pitt), Kimli Knebusch, and Clare Knebusch; and his nephew, whom he loved like a fourth son, David Henderson. Their memories of him will remain a lasting source of strength and joy.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lt. Colonel Donald E. Knebusch; his mother, Jean Knebusch; and his brother, William Knebusch.

Don leaves behind a legacy of service, laughter, and unwavering love. His presence will be deeply missed, but his stories, his warmth, and his generous spirit will continue to shine in the lives of all who knew him.
