Evelyn McKinney Green

1924 - 2016

Evelyn McKinney Green, 91, of Jamestown, died Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at Wesley Long Hospital.

Born October 1, 1924 in Davie County, she is the daughter of Rev. Clyde McKinney and Winnie Smith McKinney. Because her father was a Methodist Minister, she grew up in several areas of the Western NC Conference including Rutherfordton, Bostic, Mocksville, Greensboro, Andrews, Plateau and Jamestown. After graduating from Women's College (UNCG) with a Music degree, she began working at Main Street Methodist Church as Choir Director and Secretary. She met her husband, Robert, while working there and they married on August 23, 1947. The couple settled in Jamestown where she taught private piano at Jamestown School and became the Organist at Jamestown Methodist Church. A short time later, she became the Choir Director and served in this capacity for 25 years. In 1964, she opened and directed the Kindergarten at Jamestown Methodist Church which expanded and continues as JUMP.

Evelyn played the organ for countless weddings and funerals in the area as well as teaching piano lessons in her home.

In her early years in Jamestown, she was a member of the Garden Club; her floral arrangements often winning ribbons in local competitions. Up until recent years, she continued to enjoy working in her flower gardens. Evelyn also enjoyed sewing.

Mrs. Green is survived by her husband of 69 years, Robert L Green, daughter Carol (Dan) Feroe of High Point, and son Richard Green of Charlotte. She is also survived by two grandsons: Ian (Katelyn) Feroe of Simpsonville, SC; Grant (Brooklyn) Feroe of Rogers, AR; great-granddaughter Gemma Feroe and great-grandson Jackson Hall.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers George, Claude and Sterling McKinney.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Evelyn McKinney Green will be Sunday, May 1, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Jamestown United Methodist Church with the Revs Jim Watford and Tom Lattimer officiating. The family will greet friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall.
