Francis Shields CHARLESTON, SC - Francis "Frank" Evans Shields, 81, of Charleston, SC, formerly of Lake Wylie, SC, widower of Sue Fischer Shields, passed away Friday, March 1, 2013. A funeral service will be held Friday, March 8, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. in River Hills Community Church, 104 Hamilton's Ferry Road, Lake Wylie, SC 29710. Interment will follow the service. The family will receive friends Thursday, March 7, 2013, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at M.L. FORD & SONS FUNERAL HOME, 4820 Charlotte Hwy, Lake Wylie, SC 29710. On Saturday, March 9th, at 4:00pm, a Memorial, followed by a reception, will be held at Bishop Gadsden, 1873 Camp Rd Charleston, SC 29412. Frank was born July 4, 1931 in Baton Rouge, LA, son of the late William Morris Shields, Sr. and the late Sadie Carter Shields. He retired from DuPont Corporation, and later retired as the owner of Sunbelt Polymers. He graduated from Louisiana State University, served in the US Army, sang with the Bishop Gadsden Chapel Choir, and was a member of the Alpine 208 Masonic Lodge, The Oasis Shrine Temple, The Oasis Shrine Band and Royal Order of Jesters. Frank was a successful businessman, family man, outdoorsman, athlete, volunteer and friend to many. He loved golf, skiing, hunting, fishing, swimming and Louisiana style cooking. In addition to his wife, he is predeceased by two brothers, William Morris Shields, Jr and Joe A. Shields. He is survived by his daughter, Rebecca Shields Fockler and husband, Curtis John Fockler, of Ashburn, VA; son, Francis Evans Shields, Jr. and wife, Judith Dorothy van Zalen, of Washington, DC; daughter, Sarah Shields Horton and husband, Ozey Knight Horton, Jr., of Charleston, SC; and daughter, Sue Shields Collins and husband, Michael Arthur Collins, of Albuquerque, NM; and his 5 grandchildren: Nichols Alexander Fockler, Zachary Shields Fockler, Jonathan Nicholas Shields, Noelle Melissa Collins and Catherine Mary Collins. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lake Wylie Golf Classic to benefit the Shriner's Crippled Children's Hospital in Greenville, SC.
