Genie White Obituary
February 13, 1930 - September 27, 2025
Charlotte, North Carolina - Genie Nisbet White, 95, of Charlotte, NC, died peacefully on September 27, 2025. Born on February 13, 1930, she was the eldest daughter of Everett Phifer Nisbet and Mary McLure Nisbet. A graduate of Central High School and Randolph-Macon Woman's College, Genie married James J. White III in 1953 and they shared 55 years together until his passing in 2009. Genie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her five children: Genie Graham (Terry), Henrietta Palmer, Lucy Moore Butler (Dean), Jimmy White (Anne), and Mary Dorris (Duncan), sister Elizabeth Martin, sixteen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her sister, Mary Purvis, her granddaughter, Amanda Graham Stephany, and her son-in-law, Bill Palmer. A charter member and elder of Covenant Presbyterian Church, Genie was active in her faith and community. She served on several boards including Charlotte Country Day School and Wing Haven, where she shared her passion for gardening. She was also a member of Charlotte Country Club, Linville Golf Club, and Springdale Hall. A lifelong supporter of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, Genie loved music and continued playing piano well into her later years. She will be remembered for her strength of character, love of family, and zest for life. Her family is grateful to her amazing team of caregivers.
A memorial service will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Charlotte at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 1, 2025 with visitation following in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, Wing Haven, or a charity of the donor's choice.

Genie was a kindhearted and gracious soul I will miss - always quick to lift spirits with positive words of encouragement and interest in others. I treasure memories of brief but meaningful conversations sharing thoughts about books, symphony and above all- her love of plants. Genie was modest about her knowledge and a true `working gardener´ who inspired.

Genie was a good friend and garden mentor to me. Years ago, she helped me make some plant choices when I was starting my first garden. I loved to visit with her often at her own lovely garden. We would walk through and talk about plants, as we progressed. She met very few plants she didn't like and had tried to grow many of them. Genie was a role model for aging well too. She was full of energy, continuing to hike and visit gardens up until recently. Genie seemed to always have a positive attitude, and I had fun selling her many additions to her garden at the Wing Haven plant sales. She was very instrumental in creating the rose garden there. One of the last things she said to me was that it made her happy to think of my partner, Eldred, and me living in our beautiful home in Tryon and gardening here. I will always treasure that comment. I think she helped me realize what a wonderful hobby gardening is as we age. Thank you, Genie, you will be so missed! Bob Rossier
