George Rosser Obituary

George Thomas Rosser

November 8, 1928 - December 20, 2024

Matthews, North Carolina - George Thomas Rosser, M.D. passed away peacefully at the age of 96 on Dec. 20, 2024 surrounded by his family. George was born on Nov. 8, 1928 in Bristol, TN to Evelyn Craig Rosser and Reverend John Leonadis Rosser.

George was raised during the Great Depression, the fourth of five siblings, when butter was a luxury and government-issued coupons were required to buy sugar and gas. Excelling at a young age, he was valedictorian and captain of the football team at Ketterlinus High School in St. Augustine, FL. He attended Georgia Tech through ROTC and work-study programs, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1952 with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and selected for membership in the Tau Beta Pi honorary engineering society.

In 1952, George was drafted into the Korean War as a Commissioned Second Lieutenant of the U.S. Army Ordnance Corps. Upon his return home, he went into business with his commanding officer and served as Vice President of Pivot Automobile Air Conditioning and the U.S. Clutch Company from 1954 to 1958.

After experiencing the rollercoaster of entrepreneurship, George was motivated to find a more secure career path. He enrolled in the University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis, graduating in 1962. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and was a founding partner of Shelby Medical Associates before returning to the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill School of Medicine in 1970 to complete a residency in radiology. He practiced radiology at Cabarrus Memorial Hospital in Concord, N.C. for the remainder of his career. He served as the Secretary-Treasurer of the N.C. Chapter of the American College of Radiology for eight years and was admitted into the Fellowship of the American College of Radiology in 1993.

George was a devoted husband to Justine, his wife of 55 years, and father to his two daughters. He was always game for an adventure and became a certified pilot, scuba diver and honorary first mate in his free time. George was known for his wisdom, intellect and quick wit. An avid reader, he never let a day pass without learning something new. He loved American history, literature, science, music and travel - and had been known to enjoy a good beer. George served as a mentor and role model to many who knew him and lived by a few enduring principles that he often shared, "You are who you want to be," "Everything in life is a trade off," and "Do what is best for the patient."

George is survived by his daughters, Dr. Tena Rosser, Bo Susan Rosser; son in-laws, Rasmus Schionning and Neil J. Brookes; grandchildren, Carson and Lars Schionning and Beatrice Brookes. George's wife, Justine Burleson Rosser, passed away in 2019.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Smile Train in George's honor.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Rosser family at this time. We came to know Dr Rosser during our mutual time at Cabarrus Memorial Hospital. He was always available, helpful and very bright. He was missed after his retirement but more so now. Rest in peace.

Rest in peace. Your years on this earth blessed many of us who worked with you and were employed at CMH and TRC. I feel blessed to work with a wonderful kind man of integrity. You taught us how to be better people and better techs. Thank you for providing us with a great workplace for so many years. Always in our hearts. Prayers for your family.

I´m incredibly fortunate to have been a part of George Rosser´s family. I consulted George on every significant life decision (and many minor ones as well) because I knew no one could provide me with better, more rational, and thoughtful guidance. George wouldn´t share his opinions; instead, he would teach me how to form my own. I will forever cherish the wisdom he imparted and strive to share it with others. George was a treasure trove of stories that illuminated hidden corners. He radiated love and kindness towards all humanity. George was the epitome of excellence, and I deeply loved him. I will miss him profoundly. Farewell, George; you made the world a much better place, and ultimately, that´s the greatest gift anyone can hope for.

A life well lived. He truly influenced and inspired so many. He met you where you were but encouraged you to move onward and upward.
I came to then Cabarrus Hospital as a new graduate. I was immediately drawn to his willingness to share his vast knowledge and John Wooden quotes.
Many days I spent in the Vascular Lab with him.
"Young people need role models, not critics"-John Wooden
And George Rosser you were exactly that!! A great role model
Thank you to his family for sharing him with us. Deepest condolences.

Dr. Rosser influenced many lives during his career at Cabarrus Memorial Hospital. I was one of the lucky one's that he took under his wing to mentor. He was the reason I went back to school, got my Bachelor Degree and went on to be a member of the Radiology Management Team. I referred to him as "my hospital daddy." Carol Hauss and I were fortunate enough to spend some time with him going down memory lane about a year ago. As we told him stories he would smile, laugh or say, " did I really say or do that?" When we told him that we as well as many others became better Technologists because of him, he had no idea and he was very humble. Dr. Rosser, you will be forever remembered. To his daughters, thank you for sharing your dad with us at Cabarrus Memorial Hospital. Condolences to the family.

Godspeed Dr. Rosser. I was blessed to have been a "student" of yours for many years at Cabarrus. Your teaching was the foundation of my many years as a diagnostic imager. More than once through the years I uttered a "Thank you Dr R" for some little tidbit of medicine you had drilled into this noggin. I'm so thankful that I was able to let you know how much you meant to many of us through the years. To the family, thank you for sharing GTR with us all those radiology years and peace and sympathy to all. Rest high on that mountain Dr. R.

Dr Rosser was the radiologist to diagnose my breast cancer in 1993. He told me the diagnosis with such care and compassion. I will always see his face and know his kindness.
