George Shivar Obituary

George H. Shivar

December 21, 1946 - May 17, 2024

Lexington, North Carolina - George Goodale Shivar, Jr. passed away suddenly in the early hours of Friday, May 17th of complications from prostate cancer and heart issues he had suffered during recent years. He was the son of George and Vivian Shivar who raised their family on Belfast Drive in Charlotte. He was a member of Purcell United Methodist Church. George attended Harding High School and graduated in 1965 and was looking forward to spending the upcoming 60th reunion with his beloved classmates.

George later served in the Vietnam War on the "Sacramento", an underway replenishment ship. He and his first wife Delores (formerly Fortenberry) had two children, Deborah Leigh and Benjamin Justin. George created a business called Softdsign and worked as an early programmer of accounting and legal software. In 1995 he married Joy Shanks and the two enjoyed traveling with their business, JustaJoy Historical Treasures. George was very active with the American Legion Post 353 and VFW Post 6724 where he was the "Prime Rib King." In January 1923, George and Joy moved to High Rock Lake where George's last days were spent fishing and enjoying the wildlife. Besides Debbie, B.J. and Joy, George's survivors include his wife Joy, a brother, Ben Shivar, stepson Marcus Shanks and five grandchildren. A sister, Jerri Johannsen had previously passed. Arrangements are yet to be determined.
