Gerald Clapp Obituary

Gerald Lee Clapp
'Jerry'
GREENSBORO -- Mr. Clapp, 79, passed away on Monday, February 23, 2009, at Friends Home West in Greensboro. Private interment will be followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 27 at West Market Street United Methodist Church, 302 West Market Street, Greensboro, with Reverend Bill Ellison officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.
Jerry was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but moved to Greensboro as a young child. He graduated from Greensboro Senior High and later from Guilford College, where his football teammates gave him his nickname, 'the bull.' His college career was temporarily interrupted by a stint in the army during the Korean War. Upon his return, he married his high school sweetheart, Nancy, and they began their life journey together. They cherished the years spent raising their two children and loved being involved in their lives and activities. Some of Jerry's fondest memories are of family picnics following rounds of golf with his 'gangsome' at Carlson Farms Country Club.
Once the children were grown, they moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, where Jerry was General Manager and ultimately owner of Tar Heel Ford/Mitsubishi Truck Sales. While in Charlotte they formed many new relationships that remained with them for life through the dealership, various social and business organizations, industry functions and trips, and Myers Park United Methodist Church. Jerry especially valued his relationships with his wonderful employees at Tar Heel. Upon retirement, after twenty years in Charlotte, they moved back home to Greensboro.
Although Jerry was a successful businessman who was known and well-respected throughout the transportation industry, he will be remembered most for his friendly personality. His open, welcoming manner and playful sense of humor have won him friends throughout his life. The twinkle in his eye, his booming laugh, and his mischievous grin will remain with his family and friends forever.
Jerry was preceded in death by the love of his life, Nancy, his devoted wife of 55 years who passed away last year, as well as his parents Frederick and Beatrice Clapp, stepmother Anne Clapp, and brother, Fred Clapp.
He leaves behind his daughter, Candy Clapp Randall of Rock Hill, South Carolina, and his son, D. Mark Clapp and wife, Marilyn of Charlotte. Also surviving is brother Joe Clapp and his wife Helen of Akron, Ohio. He was the proud grandfather of Kelly and Christina, who will dearly miss their PawPaw.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the West Market Street United Methodist Church, PO Box 870, Greensboro, NC 27402, or to a charity of your choice.

Joe, One of my husband's medical school professors held that as long as a person is remembered, he truly lives. If this indeed be true, because of his many kindnesses to so many people, he will be with you and all who were fortunate to know him for a very long time to come. How fortunate you were to have him as your brother. Jane

My sincere thanks to all of you for the kind words and thoughts. Words cannot express our gratitude for the outpouring of kindness we have experienced this past week. Like my mom who passed away eleven months ago, Dad did not have a chance to thank all of their many friends for sharing with them one of the most precious possessions in life … true friendship. I know he would want me to tell you how much they cherished each of you and that he regrets not being able to tell you in person how much you meant to him. Each friendship comes with its own special memories and those memories are what continue to make us smile. Mom and Dad are smiling together now … thinking of each of you and all those shared memories. You made their lives special -- they would like for you to know that. God bless you.

Dear Clapp Family,

Your Father was an amazing man. He lit up any room he entered and he always treated me and everyone with amazing kindness. He is someone I have always admired and
someone I enjoyed every minute I was around him. Both of your parents were very special to our family and meant so much to my parents. My parents always looked forward to the times they were going to spend with your father and your mother. My prayers for comfort will be with you for days to come. God Bless Jerry Clapp.

Dear Mark and Candy, We hardly know where to begin this has been such a shock to all. Your family has been like family to us for so many years. High school together, next door neighbors, raising you children together. We just go back so far. There will always be a huge void in our lives without Nancy and Jerry. We loved them just as we love you both. You are in our prayers, Marilyn and Chuck

TAL AND SARA HENRY

February 25, 2009

No lunch as planned with Jerry on Wednesday February 25th with Tal Henry. We are shocked and confused as we have hear the news of Jerry's death. He was a very good man, best of the football team who made Tal Henry look good in his ability to do the blocking as Tal went on to score. The memories we have of Jerry and of his late wife Nancy, will continue on from the days in Greensboro to the grand times in Charlotte. We shall miss the lunch, but will be there on Friday to celebrate his life.
