Henry Patrick Obituary

Henry Louis Patrick
Henry Louis Patrick, 84, of Charlotte, NC, died of natural causes Saturday, May 27, 2006 at Carolinas Medical Center. A man of profoundly deep faith and immensely widespread love, he will be remembered - and missed - in so many different ways by the myriad people whose lives he so delicately and meaningfully touched.
Born August 2, 1921, to Andrew Jackson Patrick and Azile Parr in Newberry, SC, he attended public school in both Washington, DC and Newberry before entering Erskine College, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1942. Two years later, in 1944, Dr. Patrick was conferred a Master of Theology degree from Princeton Theological Seminary. He then served for two years as a Marine Corps Chaplain during World War II in the Pacific Theater and, upon returning home, undertook graduate work at both Columbia University and Union Theological Seminary in New York.
Dr. Patrick's long and rich pastorate began at First Statesville Church, and he was later pastor of First Charlotte Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. In 1951, he was named pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church in St. Louis, MO, where he served for six years. During this time, he earned a Doctorate degree from Westminster College in Fulton, MO. From 1956 to 1962, Dr. Patrick was pastor of Second Presbyterian Church in Kansas City, MO.
Beginning in 1962, a passionate, more than three-decade-long pastorate at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC, punctuated Dr. Patrick's professional career. In his time there, he spread hope and love through the word of God to countless people and became a cherished friend to an entire community. His divinely inspired devotion to that which is right and just over that which is standard and accepted extended to work involving civil liberties, equal opportunity, and causes of the downtrodden.
Dr. Patrick married Elizabeth Plaxco, an Erskine classmate, in 1946, and began a precious union and companionship that was evident to all. Dr. Patrick is survived by his loving wife, along with three daughters, Jane Patrick Findlay (husband Bill and children, Heather, Laura, Daniel and Claire, and grandchild, Patrick), of Grand Junction, CO, Mary Patrick (husband Alan Hall) of Chapel Hill, NC, and Barbara Patrick (husband Arthur Stock and son Isaac) of Clarksboro, NJ. Dr. Patrick was preceded in death by a son, Henry, who died in childhood.
His friends and family remember him as a man of instantaneously quick wit and razor-sharp intellect, whose numerous life passions ranged from flowers and poetry to sports and driving. He loved learning and expanding his mind, and well-reasoned debates as well as fabulously outlandish tales occupied special places in his heart. As a husband, father, grandfather and friend, he was of a truly special breed. As a minister of God, his powerful voice was unparalleled. Above all else, he was an inspiration, and he had a supreme gift for giving life to messages through his words.
A funeral service will be held at 11 AM today, May 29, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 3115 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28211.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church.

The passing of Frederick Buechner brought to mind when Rev. Dr. Louis Patrick came to Village Presbyterian Church after he retired from his church in Charlotte, NC, for I don't remember how many months. My husband and I were in one of his classes together and I was in one daytime class which his wife attended also. It was in this class that I became acquainted with Buechner and read his three memoirs and then his other books which enriched my life and ministry. All because Dr. Patrick asked me to tell the class about Buechner prior to reading a selection of his works. I remember how delightful his wife was. I was so glad to find this obituary and learn more of his life and I wanted his family to know how much he meant to some Presbyterians in Kansas. I treasure my copy of Sacred Journey with the dedication to Dr. Patrick on which he autographed a message to me.

For eighteen years Chick and I had the privilege of being members of Dr. Patrick's congregation at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. We regretted leaving his pastorate when Chick was transferred to Raleigh. His sermons were truly inspirational and his life was a blessing to many. We extend our condolences to Elizabeth, Jane, Mary, Barbara and their families.

Purely by accident Friday night (June 2) I read the weekly "ARP News Update",saw at the bottom of this one page publication the news of a former ARP minister, scanned the page and was so surprised to read of Louis' death. All the times we have been to Charlotte since our daughter Hannah's wedding 11 years ago and passed right by this church I have wanted to visit you. Thankfully I did get to talk to the two of you but how I regret we never got you and your family to come to White Oak for a visit in the past few years. Maybe we will get some of you sometime yet to come meet your relatives.

Our condolences, Hannah Patrick Phillips

After some 25 years worshiping at Louis Patrick's church, I sold my business in 1995 to work for "The Church." I spent the next nine years as a volunteer for the Presbyterian Church (USA) in New Mexico and New York. I will always be greatful for his friendship and his influence.

Dr. Patrick had the special gift of knowing what to say, when to say it, and how to say it. He was a hero to me and an inspiration. He is one of the most special people I have ever had the opportunity to meet, and I feel blessed that he was a part of my life.

Our prayers are with his family.

My PaPa's counsel has and will continue to guide and inspire me. His wisdom, kindness and integrity taught me so very much about living and loving. He was the very best grandfather and I will always cherish memories of reading poetry together, playing the organ in church and grandfather-granddaughter conversations. My thoughts and prayers are with NaNa, Mom, Aunt Barbara, Aunt Mary as well as all those touched by PaPa's grace, humor and faith. We are all so blessed to have shared in his life.
