Herman Moore Obituary

Herman Aubrey Moore, III CHARLOTTE - Herman Aubrey Moore, III died in his home on November 7, 2012, surrounded by his family. Born in Charlotte on June 22, 1953, Herman was the eldest son of the late Bette Craig Moore and the late Senator Herman Aubrey Moore, Jr. He attended Charlotte Country Day School, Woodberry Forest and graduated from Queens University. He began his professional career selling residential real estate at Moffatt Sherard & Associates. Subsequently, he went into commercial real estate and developed land in North and South Carolina. Herman was a man of great humor and unconditional love. His ability to make both friends and strangers of all ages smile will be remembered by those whose lives he touched. An avid outdoorsman and lifetime supporter of Ducks Unlimited, Herman enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father, son-in-law, grandson and friends. He also enjoyed spending time in DeBordieu with his family, boating in the creeks and joining a crowd of friends and family for a day on the beach. He loved girls' softball and raised his three girls to do the same, never missing a game or a season as their coach. Herman's heart was tremendous - he took great pleasure in helping others, volunteering at Friendship Trays and utilizing his considerable skill as an amateur auctioneer to benefit many charities. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude for the outpouring of love, prayers, support and comfort from friends and family over the last few weeks. Herman certainly felt the love surrounding him in his final journey and the family is forever grateful. They would also like to thank Emily Dunbar and the Hospice staff for their assistance in making his passing one of peace and comfort. Herman is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Ann, his three adoring daughters, Aubrey Moore Grier and her husband, Brandon; Ellen McConnell Moore, and Anna Bett Newman Moore; his step-mother Martha Moore Wickham and her husband, Charles, his sister Leslie Moore Sanchez and her husband, Jose Luis; his brothers Philip Craig Moore and his wife, Tik; and Eric McConnell Moore and his wife, Brenda; his brother-in-law, Paul Randolph Sheahan; his three nieces; and two very special grandchildren who brought him endless joy, Stuart Rushing Grier and Elle Newman Grier. Herman is also survived by his many friends, whom he considered family as well. A service to celebrate Herman's life will be held at Myers Park Presbyterian Church on November 10, 2012, at 11:00 am. Following the service, the family will receive friends at the home of Aubrey and Brandon Grier, 826 Hempstead Place. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Friendship Trays, 2401 Distribution St., 28203, Hospice Palliative Care Charlotte, 1420 E. 7th Street, 28204, or the charity of the donor's choice. I'll miss Herman whose presence growing up

November 13, 2012

To my dear friend Aubrey: I am so sorry for your loss. Herman was indeed a very special man. I will forever fondly remember as a young CCDS Buccaneer the joy I had knowing that "today is Herman's carpool day". I remember he always had Chuck Boozer on the radio during our commute to 1440 Carmel Rd, but Mr. Boozer was no match for Herman's sense of humor! As we all got older, that sense of humor always made us all feel young at heart. And "young at heart" is how he will be remembered in all of our minds. One could go many years without seeing Herman, but once we had the chance to reconnect or see each other at a wedding/event etc, he did not skip a beat, and always had an instant one-liner and a fond, amusing memory to share. He never forgot a name or a face he loved, and we shall never forget him. For he too was deeply loved, and will be forever missed. How lucky we all were to have known him! You, your Mom, your sisters, and all of Herman's family and friends are in my deepest thoughts and prayers. Thanks Herman, for all the warm and funny memories. Quite simply, Herman was "the man". Rest in peace, friend.

Ann, I was deeply saddened this afternoon when I read the paper during my break. I saw Herman just a few short months ago and chatted briefly with him. Incidentally I live behind Country Day School where Herman went to school.
I want you to know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and the rest of the family
during this difficult time.
Herman, you were the Prince of the City.

Herman I am quite confident made St.Peter smile when he saw Herman coming to him with that warm wonderful grin we all knew and cherished and that waving hand in the air. He was a friend dear to all that knew him. God's grace is upon him and Herman is still smiling upon us all. We will miss you brother but never ever forget you. May God grant all you wonderful girls and Ann peace and grace in your loss. Know Herman's spirit and happiness is with you and us all.

What a well-written obituary to commemorate Herman's life. The Charlotte community (and DeBordieu) have lost a fine man. He was the definition of "good people." I feel confident that Herman's legacy will live on for many generations to come. We love you all.

Herman's awesomeness is apparent in the fabulous daughters that he raised! In fact, I named my own daughter "Aubrey" because, as a Charlotte Country Day teacher for many years, I remember how impressed I was with Herman's own Aubrey (and the others who followed!!) He lives on through you girls! Bravo!
