Irina Yarmolenko

Irina "Ira" Yarmolenko had a sunny spirit, a quick smile and friends everywhere she went.

She wasn't supposed to die at age 20, friends and family said.

The UNC Charlotte sophomore was found Monday next to her car on the banks of the Catawba River in Mount Holly. On Wednesday evening, police still did not know how Yarmolenko died and how she ended up so far from campus.

Tonight, her friends will honor her with a candlelight vigil.

Yarmolenko was born in the Ukraine but grew up in Chapel Hill. Her brother, Pavel Yarmolenko, 25, said their family moved to North Carolina in the 1990s as refugees. Their parents found science jobs in Greensboro and later moved to Chapel Hill.

Pavel, a graduate student in biomedical engineering at Duke University, described his sister as a dedicated student who loved to travel and learn about other cultures. She played piano and tennis.

"She was incredible," he said. "There's nothing bad about her."

She graduated from Chapel Hill High in 2006 and began studying at UNCC.

There, she was a member of the Russian Club and more recently, a photographer and occasional writer for the student newspaper. She also worked as a computer assistant.

Her brother said she'd always talked about doing something to help people make their lives better or easier.

"Everything that she's ever done was to help people," he said.

She'd planned to transfer to UNC Chapel Hill to major in public health after finishing this semester in Charlotte, he said.

Arthur Jackson, vice chancellor for student affairs at UNCC, said students and staff who knew Yarmolenko were offered counseling Wednesday. He said university police were helping Mount Holly investigators.

"It hit us hard," he said. "It's like losing a family member. She was connected to a lot of organizations on and off campus."

As her brother put it: "She knew everybody everywhere."

She had 630 friends on her Facebook profile. By Wednesday evening, more than 100 of them had posted messages there saying how much they'll miss her.

Her friend Tyler Robinson, a sophomore at UNCC, said she was "the most beautiful person I've ever met, inside and out. She was completely selfless."

Mount Holly Police Chief David Belk said he's hoping the public can help police figure out more about where she had been Monday between about 10 a.m., when someone reported seeing her at a coffee shop in the university area, to 1:15 p.m. when she was found by a watercraft rider.

Belk said she appeared to have driven off the road behind the Waters Edge development and the Stowe Family YMCA.

"It's strange that anyone would go to that area," he said, noting that there had not been reports of crime there.

Pavel said he hopes this tragedy will prompt people to think about all students who died too young.

"Don't forget to tell your loved ones that you love them," Pavel said, breaking into tears. "I didn't get a chance to, and I can tell you I wish I had."

A candlelight vigil will be held at the Belk Tower on the UNC Charlotte campus at 7 tonight.Visitation will be held at Walker's Funeral Home, 120 W. Franklin St., Chapel Hill (919-942-3861) from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday. She will be buried at 4 p.m. Saturday in Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery.

I heard Irina's story on a true crime show and it moved me to tears.
How can there be such evil in the world that can take away such a radiant light.
To her family and friends my deepest condolences, and to Irina herself- "May your soul shine bright forever in heaven"

They should have named the coffee shop in her honor.

As Christmastime draws near
all of us wish you were here
i remember you in the smells of snow
and in the the moon's bright halo
there is an emptiness this time of year
that only you could ever fill my dear
i am trudging trudging on, just for you
even if it isn't always easy to do
but the memories i will cherish forever
and because of you i swear this world will be made better

There are no words that can relay the depth of the pain, anguish and grief involved for a family losing a loved one so suddenly and tragically. Please try to take some comfort in knowing that GOD's plan is much bigger than ours and that he needed his “Angel” to come home. Our prayers are with Irina’s family and everyone who grieves for her. May God Bless all of you and lead you down the path toward healing. Please accept warmest regards and condolences from a family who also is suffering a recent loss very much like yours.

I am truly saddened to hear of Irina's death :( . Irina was in my Physics class and although I didn't really know her too well, I did talk to her briefly a couple of times during class and she was always extremely polite, happy, and exactly as people described her. A one-of-a-kind human being.

Not once did I see her sad or angry, she was ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS smiling or waving to people she hardly knew.

My condolences to her family and friends. May she rest in peace.

I was Irian's photography instructor at the Light Factory in Charlotte. Irina had the kind of joyous, energenic curiosity that made our classes so much fun. Her enthusiasm was contagious.
I specifically remember the look of anticipation on her face when she placed her first black and white enlargement in the developer tray and how her face became radiant with a smile as she watched the image magically appear. Irina was one of my most promising students and she was one of the rewards that made me glad that I do what I do........teach.

My son also goes to UNCC and lived in the same dorm that Irina was in. He said he didn't actually know her but he had seen her and she seemed like a really nice girl. It's so sad. We say goodbye to our children and send them off to college, knowing it's time for them to begin the process of becoming an independent person.. but we expect them to come back. I'm so sorry your daughter won't be able to do that. She was a beautiful girl and very bright from what I've read. I know you were proud of her. Someday you'll be reunited with her but in the meantime I hope you'll get some comfort from knowing that she touched so many lives in a positive way and was loved by many.

I was so saddened to hear of the passing of someone who sounded like a wonderful , loving and caring person. It sounds like she touched so many lives and made a strong impact. I was able to spend three months in Alaska with Irina and Zack. I will never forget the smile on her face and the dedication in her heart. She took every chance she could to hike in the wilds of Alaska. She was so passionate about life and the adventure that comes with it. Dear Ira,

I met you only once; however, I did not realize then the impact you would have on my life even now after you are gone.

I have been dealing with a lot and tend to fall into a bitter/selfish attitude. I realize now how important it is to appreciate life.

I know that sounds cliché and trite but I am now just starting to understand the implications of such an idea. Through all of the stress and heartache these past few weeks I forgot to realize there are many things in life I cannot change, nor control; however, I can decide how I respond.

This is something you apparently understood, as it is evident in the photos of you left behind -- you were always full of life and smiles.

I am amazed at your life and the amount of people you touched.

Thank you for being such a beautiful person, thank you for taking the time to smile.

We must ask ourselves is this life all there is? Matthew 6:9,10 Her life was too short she was too young. We have to have faith in what the bible really teaches. We were created to live forever in Paradise conditions. Were we not? Gen1:28.
Since sin came into the world and death through sin; humans fall asleep in death.(Romans 5:12) God has promised that there will be a time when we will see our dead loved ones again. HE promised. (John5:28 and Acts24:15)

In all my worst nightmares, I never imagined something as awful as your departure. You're the most beautiful soul in the universe, and I hope you know that all of your friends and loved ones would back me up on that. All the downs in my life never hurt me much with you by my side, and I hope I will be strong enough to remain happy without you around. It's gonna be difficult, but like your brother said at your burial, I think we'll all get through this knowing how powerful your love is. I MISS YOU : (

I met Ira when she contacted me about arranging an interview for the University Times with a journalist/author who was speaking on campus on March 26 of this year. She was so excited for the opportunity and I could tell she had researched well in preparation.

This winsome, endearing, and beautiful inside and out young lady is now in heaven so suddenly and so soon. Heaven's gain but to us still here, a very great loss. My prayers go out to Ira's family.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not're coming here to me.

Irina had scheduled a study session for our French class for Tuesday May 6th, it was weird for her not to show up since our test was that same day. During the test I kept looking up to where she sat and wondered where she was at....I had no idea until today of what happened to her. I sat across from her and she would always smile at me and say "hi"...I really enjoyed her reading out loud in French she was always so enthusiastic. She is now in a better place. I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Irina. What a remarkable young woman. In this time of loss, we may find comfort in the promise of John 5:28, 29 that says, "Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life". We can look forward to seeing our loved ones again, and together, live on earth and "find [our] exquisite delight in the abundance of peace" (Psalm 37:11). May this hope comfort your hearts during your time of bereavement.

Deepest condolences, and prayers and wishes of healing for Ira's family, and also for all who knew her. Our family's path crossed Ira's path during high school in Chapel Hill when she and friends were visiting, or at various events, with our daughter. Irina was actually one of the first people I talked to at UNC Charlotte. We were both in the same SOAR groups, as we were both planning to attend the university. I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Irina. I did not know her personally but I was moved by her obituary. Death is never easy to cope with but especially when it touches the life of someone so young and so beautiful. In your time of sorrow it is my hope that you all can find hope in the promise that in the near future our dead loved ones will be brought back to life to us (John 5:28,29). In the meantime my prayers are with you.

As a mother, I cannot comprehend the pain that Irina's family & friends are experiencing right now. All I can offer are a few scriptures that have brought me comfort at the death of a loved one. First, James 1:13 assures us that God does not take our loved ones from us in such a cruel way. It states: "When under trial, let no one say: “I am being tried by God.” For with evil things God cannot be tried nor does he himself try anyone." Our loving God is called "the father of tender mercies and the God of all comfort" (2 Corinthians 1:3). May he comfort you now through the hope of the resurrection in which he promises that "all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out". (John 5:28)
I pray that this will bring you a measure of peace in your hearts.

My sister went to CHHS with Ira... I did not know her. My sis described Ira as so genuine and such an amazing human being - so brilliant... it says a lot about Ira. It is easy to see this transcendent high regard of Ira and her way was universal, and unwavering across the landscape of all her friends and peers.

So, we are all connected in this.
Just know that people she never knew are absolutely aching over this, and I am sending every bit of love and positivity that can be wrenched... to the family and friends of Ira... a good soul.

All my best.

Ira was our children's first babysitter when we moved to Chapel Hill. They loved her and so did we. She was such a beautiful person.

I knew Ira from class at UNCC and from a long conversation when I saw just how genuinely she cared about people and how excited she was about life. Everyone who met her knew that she was someone special. Thank you for letting me know you Ira. We will all miss you.

Ira, it was a blessing to have known you; your passing has left us all with a huge void. What will we do without your cheerful smiles, your sincere hugs and your caring, gentle heart?

I only met briefly but in the span of an hour, I realized that she was one of the kindest and warm hearted people I will ever have the pleasure of knowing. She made everyone in the room light up with her spirit and she will be greatly missed.

I had a very close relationship with Ira for about 7 years, we dated for almost 3 years. She was the most influential person in my life. I still cannot grasp the fact that my little greeneyes is gone from this world for good. I know your up there looking down on us Ira, and just know how much I miss you. I hope you have all the Harris Teeter cookies you could ever imagine up there. I love you.
