James "Jimmy" Wesley Broadway

Charlotte, North Carolina - A North Carolina native, Jimmy Broadway, passed away on Saturday, April 17th, 2021. He was born on April 20, 1945, son of the late Olin Harvin Broadway, Sr. and Frances Amelia Pitts. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Henry Broadway.
Jimmy was a successful student athlete graduating from Raleigh's Broughton High School, in addition to the Raleigh CAPS; playing alongside buddy, "Pistol" Pete Marivich. Jimmy continued his athletic career with four years of ACC Basketball at Wake Forest University under Legendary Coach, Bones McKinney. Jimmy graduated from Wake Forest in 1969 and went on to coach Lincoln Junior High School's Basketball Team. In 1970, Jimmy began working for Charlotte Country Day School (CCDS) as a Math Teacher and Coach for Varsity Basketball, Tennis, Track and JV Football, while also serving as head of PE and Physical Plant Operations. In 1986, Jimmy accepted the role as Physical Plant Director at Charlotte Latin School (CLS); later becoming Athletic Director in 1993. In 1986, it must be noted that Jimmy coached the Hawk's Middle School Basketball Team to 69 straight wins. Among numerous other accomplishments, Jimmy's coaches and teams at Charlotte Latin School won eight consecutive Wachovia/Wells Fargo Cups. (A triumph for NCISAA state play). Jimmy served on the Board of Managers for the NCISAA for 15 years, receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award. Shortly after retirement, Jimmy was inducted into the NCISAA's Hall of Fame.
Jimmy was loved by so many! We all know who we are! Jimmy, my amazing Daddy, was your 2nd father, best friend and confidant.
A Private Family Burial will be held at Raleigh Memorial Park on Saturday, April 24th at 1 pm. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Charlotte Latin School's Performing Arts Center at 2 pm on Saturday, May 1st.
Survivors include his brother, Olin H. Broadway, Jr. and wife Sadye Anne of Charlotte, NC and sister, Fabian A. Jackson and husband Robert of Clemmons, NC. In addition are his three children, Elizabeth Gionis and husband Demeter of Waxhaw, NC; son, William J. Broadway and wife Betsy of Matthews, NC; and daughter, Fabian Brandon Broadway and husband Jonathan Zinkan of Charlotte, NC; and seven grandchildren: Rachel Gionis, Eleni Gionis, Nicole Broadway, Lauren Broadway, Preston Broadway, Rhett Broadway and Corinne Broadway. He was also preceded in death by his ex-wife, Doris Browning Broadway.
Jimmy was also known for his love of animals, his green thumb and the fact that he could fix just about anything.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Charlotte Latin School Athletics or the Humane Society of Charlotte.
Jimmy led a life of fortitude; embarrassing, inspiring and guiding all those he came into contact with! "A beacon of integrity!"
