James Crowley Obituary

James Gerard Crowley, Jr.
SPARTANBURG -- James Gerard Crowley, Jr., age 82, husband of the late Jane Walsh McClancy Crowley of 230 Club Meadows Court, died Thursday morning, September 7, 2006.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on September 27, 1923, Mr. Crowley was the son of the late James Gerard and Helen McNeil Crowley. He graduated from Spartanburg High School and was a member of the University of Notre Dame Class of 1944. Mr. Crowley was a veteran of the United States Army, 10th Light Mountain Division and served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was a life long member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. Mr. Crowley was founder and President of Cherokee Textiles, Inc.
He is survived by his six children, three daughters, Margaret Helen Crowley Cole, Jane Walsh Crowley of Spartanburg, and Mary Gilman Crowley of Charlotte, North Carolina; three sons, James Gerard Crowley, III, Christopher Marion Crowley and his wife, Garrow Hudson Crowley, Kevin Glenn Crowley and his wife, Margaret Crouch Crowley of Spartanburg; two half-brothers, Edward Patrick Crowley and his wife Catherine Brown Crowley of Spartanburg, and Francis Michael Crowley and his wife Margaret Spillman Crowley of Richmond, Virginia; a step-brother, Joseph Steele Jenkins and his wife Donna Jenkins of Spartanburg. Eleven grandchildren, Helen McNeil Cole Akridge and her husband David Hawthorne Akridge, Jr. of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Claude Cole, IV and his wife, Ashleigh Orr Cole, of Anderson, South Carolina , Kevin Lewis Cole of Spartanburg, Patrick Walsh Crowley of San Diego, California, Anna Christine Crowley and her husband Michael Redding, of Charlotte, North Carolina, John Timothy Crowley, of New York, NY, Elsa Garrow Crowley, Christopher Marion Crowley, Jr., Kathleen Walsh Crowley, Kevin McClancy Crowley, Margaret Garland Crowley, all of Spartanburg; three great-grandchildren, David Hawthorne Akridge, III, Katherine McNeil Akridge of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Claude Cole, V of Anderson South Carolina. He was predeceased by a son-in-law, Claude 'Buddy' Cole, III.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, September 11, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church conducted by the Reverend James M. Crowley and Reverend Michael McCafferty. Internment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
It was the fervent wish of Mr. Crowley that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to Saint Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Building Fund, 161 North Dean Street, Spartanburg, South Carolina, 29302.
The family will be at 1315 Pinecrest Road, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
