James Putman "Jim", "Red" CHARLOTTE - Mr. Putman, 82, of Charlotte, NC, passed away Monday, the 26th of January 2015, at Novant Health Presbyterian Harris Hospice Unit surrounded by his family. He was born the 26th of November 1932 in Danville, Virginia, one of two sons to the late Calvis Lee Putman, Sr. and Pattie Martin Putman. He was a 1951 graduate of Harding High School and had previously served for four years as the President of the Harding H. S. Alumni Association. Mr. Putman proudly served his country for three years in The United States Navy during the Korean War where he served upon the USS Prairie. After the war, "Red", as he was affectionately known, returned to Charlotte where he began a career that lasted forty years with the U. S. Postal Service. Beginning as a substitute letter carrier, then supervisor and oversaw the opening of the Idlewild Station and served as manager of the Delivery and Collection department at US Postal bulk facility in Charlotte. Jim was a member of the National Association of Postal Supervisors and had served as President of the Local Branch #183, served as VP for the US Southeastern area and VP for the US Southern Region and upon his retirement he was VP and Chairman of the board for Field Services for the entire United States. Jim was a faithful and dedicated member of Amity Presbyterian Church for 57 years where he had served as treasurer, deacon, scout master, member of the church softball team and President of the Presbytery of Mecklenburg County. Under Jims' guidance over 25 young men earned their Eagle Scout Award. The Putman family will greet friends from 12:00 Noon until 1:00 PM, Thursday, the 29th of January 2015 in the church parlor of Amity Presbyterian Church. A service to celebrate James J. Putman's life will follow at 1:00 PM in the sanctuary. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery in the Putman family plot. A reception will follow in Johnson Hall. Mr. Putnam is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years in two weeks, Mrs. Shirley J. Putman of Charlotte, NC; son, Terry L. Putman, Sr. and his wife, Carolyn; grandson, Terry "Lindsay" Putman, II and his wife, Allison; granddaughter, Margaret Ann Putman all of Raleigh, NC; three great-grandchildren: James Wray Putman, Henry Tyree Putman and Lily Ann Putman. In addition to his parents and a brother, Calvis Lee Putman, Jr. he was preceded in death by a son, Timothy "Tim" Jerome Putman in November of 2012. Memorials may be made in remembrance of James J.
