Janice Godfrey Obituary

Janice Rose Johnson Godfrey CHARLOTTE - Janice Rose Johnson Godfrey, the 3rd child of Harry Clarkson Johnson and Virginia Craig was born on January 19, 1932. At the tender young age of 14, this spirited young girl told her mother that she had met the man she was going to marry. True to her word, Janice Rose married Maddrey Myers Godfrey on August 18th, 1951 and this union was secure for 62 years, ending with the death of Janice Rose on January 3, 2014. After graduating from Harding High School, Janice attended Queens College and went to work for DuPont. While Myers was in the service, Janice had their first child, a son, Richard Myers Godfrey who died in infancy. Janice became a homemaker and mother to the four daughters, Dr. Virginia Godfrey, Melanie Bell, Tracy Godfrey and Ashley Reeves. She supported the girls in all their activities becoming a horse show mom, softball, soccer and baseball fan, and an enthusiastic Tar Heel basketball supporter. Active in the church, she taught the three year old Sunday School Class at Durham Memorial Baptist church over 30 years. Her creative flare always kept the children interested and active. Janice is survived by three loving son-in-laws, Dr. Craig Dees, Dart Bell, and Mike Reeves, and one grandson-in-law, Danny Narup. She was instrumental in raising and supporting five grandsons, Austin Kelly, Colten Bell, Justin Reeves, Preston Reeves, Trevor Reeves, and two granddaughters, Mariah Narup and Dalton Bell. In 2013, Janice and Myers became great-grandparents, welcoming Owen Daniel Narup to the family. A visitation will be from 2:00-4:00PM Sunday, January 5th at Durham Memorial Baptist Church, 1601 Toddville Rd. A service to celebrate her life will be at 2:00PM Monday, January 6th in the Paul Helton Chapel of Forest Lawn Funeral Home. Interment will be private for the family in Forest Lawn West Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, make memorials to Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 E. 7th St., Charlotte, NC, 28204 "or the Humane Society of Lincoln County, PO Box 23, Lincolnton, NC, 28093 or to the Alzheimer's Foundation, 3800 Shamrock Dr., Charlotte, NC 28215. We moved across the street from the Godfrey's almost 16 years ago and I will always remember Janice as being a very kind and friendly neighbor. She was always so beautiful and well dressed every time I saw her, even if she was out sweeping her front walk. She always had a smile on her face and never failed to wave to us if she saw us coming or going. I will always have kind remembrances of the beautiful, kind lady that lived across the street and the deep affections her husband had for her. Our deepest condolences to all the family and friends whose hearts are filled with sadness at this time.
