John Craddock Obituary

John Goodwin Craddock, Jr. ELI WHITNEY - John Goodwin Craddock, Jr., husband, father, physician, died on January 12, 2014, at his beloved home in the Eli Whitney Community of Southern Alamance County. He was born June 11, 1926 in Lynchburg, Virginia to John Goodwin Craddock, Sr. and the former Louise Moretz, both of whom predeceased him. Dr. Craddock was educated in the Lynchburg and Charlotte city schools as well as Duke University and was a 1954 Graduate of the Duke University School of Medicine. His internship and residency years in Internal Medicine were served at what is now UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. During WWII he served as a Seaman First Class radioman aboard the destroyer USS John R. Craig in the Pacific Theater. In 1953 he married medical classmate Annabelle Thomas with whom he had four children; Charles McCoy, Elaine, John III, and Ann Louise, all of them who survive him. Charles gave him two grandchildren; Scott Thomas and Hannah Catherine; John III gave him Alexander Williams and Anna Helen. After the death of his first wife, Dr. Craddock married Frances Elizabeth Garrison with whom he shared forty-three years of great love, contentment, lively conversation and political argument. His sense of humor as well as his kind and gentle spirit will be sorely missed by all that knew him. His younger sister, Ella Goodwin Craddock Martin died in 1973. At his express wish he will be cremated and there will be no formal services and no formal visitation. His ashes will be scattered by family members at locations he loved which were chosen by him. An animal lover all of his life, he would be pleased to know that in lieu of flowers, any memorials to him might take the form of contributions to The Humane Society of Alamance County, PO Box 5117, Burlington, NC, 27216. Dr. Craddock's wife and son, John, appreciate beyond saying the love and assistance rendered to him and to them by his great and good friend, Dr. Jeffrey W. Byrnett, in the days prior to his death. Williams Funeral & Cremation Services in Burlington, NC is assisting the family. An online book of memories can be signed at www.williamsfuneralandcremation.com

One had but to read the local
obits after this man's retire-
ment to see what a rare breed
of physician he was. Between
the two of them, Dr and Mrs.
Craddock salvaged more lives
and displayed more interest
and involvement than any med-
ical people I find myself in-
volved with these days. Their
willingness to respond in what
fashion was needed when it was
needed considerably lengthen-
ed the lives of three of my im-
mediate family members and sal-
vaged some otherwise fatally
flawed relationships with their
wise counsel. Prayers for you,
Frances. I grieve with you at
his loss.

My mother's life was saved by this man's
intervention. He opened his office just
as we had given up hope of a positive
outcome and diagnosed her in five min-
utes time after multiple other opinions. She was clearly dying due to
incorrect treatment until that day. My
uncle, as well, had one of those "don't"
bring him in opinions when Mrs. Craddock
asked if we could transport him by car.
We could, we did and he gained five more
years of productive life after that.
The two of them worked in concert to
make happen what needed to and actually
listened to what patients and families
had to say. There will be no other like
him in my lifetime.

Doc and Mrs. Craddock taught me the importance of caring for patients and their families. I will always treasure the memories made with you both in the years I worked for you. I appreciate the love, care, and support given me as well. Your values instilled upon me made me want to be part of the medical world. I will always remember you both and thank you from the bottom of my heart. Even though I wasn't your child you treated me as such. My love amd prayers are with you Mrs. Craddock. Doc, I'll miss you.
Sincerely
