Ed was born on October 4, 1924, to the late Mary Allan Embrey Faulkner and John Edward Faulkner. He was a native and lifelong resident of Greensboro and graduated from Greensboro High School in 1941. He was a long-time member of Christ United Methodist Church, where he served in numerous lay leadership roles.
Ed was an Army and Air Force veteran of World War II, where he served in meteorology operations in the Pacific. He attended Yale University, Vanderbilt University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he graduated in 1948.

Ed was an avid golfer and enjoyed his involvement with a number of civic organizations and causes, including the Boy Scouts and the Gate City Kiwanis Club.
A faithful and devoted husband, Ed shared 54 wonderful years of marriage with his wife Marie. Ed and Marie were an inseparable couple who enjoyed many happy times and special occasions with family and friends in Greensboro, Charlotte and at Grandfather Mountain. In recent years, Ed and Marie have been residents of Friends Homes West in Greensboro.
Ed was preceded in death by his father, mother and three sisters, Mary Embrey Faulkner Folger, Edna Faulkner Weatherly, and Mildred Faulkner Clark.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Cuthbertson Faulkner; two sons, John Edward Faulkner, III of Greensboro, and Reynolds Cuthbertson Faulkner and wife, Mary Ruth Cooke Faulkner of Charlotte; and four grandchildren, Kathleen, Julia, Courtney and Matthew Faulkner of Charlotte. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, William Reynolds Cuthbertson, Jr. and sister-in-law, the Reverend Julie Cuthbertson Clarkson, both of Charlotte, NC; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
